Thats prety vague. There are at least 4 different configurations possible. You dont say whether AV Receiver is HDMI, Recorder is HDMI/Component/SVideo, etc. Please provide models if possible.

Your not going to be able to connect in series (not sure if thats your goal) since your limited by the type of connections you can use. Your receiver is going to have to be switched depeneding on what source you want to listen too. DVR, DVD, etc. HDMI is going to important for your TV connection. Radio Shack has cheap HDMI cables.
So... connect HDMI from DVR to HDTV this will give you sound and picture to TV. Connect DVR optical or coaxial ( RCA if you dont care about surround) to Receiver to give you DVR sound thru Receiver input.
Connect DVD to receiver via optical/coaxial/rca for DVD sound thru receiver (again RCA is not recommended for surround).
Connect Component video to HDTV(or HDMI if TV has second HDMI input) to give you video from DVD.
Connect Yellow video or S-video from DVR to DVD recorder input to allow recording from DVR. Also connect red/white audio to (same) DVD input.
That should cover it.

I'm trying to connect my dvd recorder to my Motorola dtc6400 DVR. I can record picture but not sound because there is only one set of RCA audio outputs on the DVR and they go to the HDTV. There is also...

See if your TV has an audio out socket at the back. If so connect this aodio out to the DVR to record the sound . If not buy a pair of ( one for Left channel and the other for Right channel ) one is to two Y connector and plug the jack to the DVR and connect the split ends to the TV and Motorola DVR. That way you will have sound going to TV & DVR

My 3 year old Panasonic VCR (DMR ES20) is still stuck at 000000 after a power outage. I have unplugged it, it says Hello but it won't open. If I press on Power for a few seconds, the blinking time shows up...

Hello, Ejband -

I believe your Panasonic DMR ES20 is a DVR (Digital Video Recorder) and not a VCR (Video Cassette Recorder.)

If you do not have the user manual for your DVR, you can find it here to download for free:
http://tv.manualsonline.com/manuals/mfg/panasonic/dmres20.html
It is a PDF document, so you will need Adobe Reader software (free).

I suggest you run through the set up procedures for your DVR, just as if it is a new installation. Among other steps you will need to reset the time (reset the clock.)

Connect dvd recorder to cable box and hdtv

I have posted a tip that should help you out with your problem follow the link below but there is one minor variation for connecting to your TV.

On step 3 of the connections section substitute the follow for your situation.

You will need 1 component cable (Red/Blue/Green/Red/White cable)

3) Connect the Green/Blue/Red connectors to the back of the DVR labeled "COMPONENT OUT" matching the colors. Connect the same ends to the input of the back of the TV again matching the colors.

4) Connect the last two connectors (Red/White) to the back of the DVR to the AUDIO IN on the TV.

Other than this variation all shoud be the same.

Good Luck...

Cannot record from cable box dvr to vhs tape

DVRs have embedded digital rights functionality to prevent you from doing what you are try to do. In addition the VCR has logic to respond to that and prevent recording by blocking the signal.

That is likely why you cannot get a signal.

THE CONNECTION HAS BEN CHANGED FROM AV CONNECTION (RED, WHITE, YELLOW ) TO COMPONENT CABLE (RED, GREEN, BLUE) YOU WOULD HAVE TO SOMEHOW RESET THE DVR TO DEFAULT SETTINGS TO GET IT BACK TO NORMAL.

Panasonic recorder

Have you checked your cables? Start resetting one unit at a time until you isolate the culprit. Don't forget the simple unplug all units to let them reset. .
Panasonic DMR-EH55
Motorola 6416 DVR
Sony STR-DA5000
27 analog tv!
Sony 5 Disk DVD Changer

PC connected
You think I have fun when something hiccups? A software snaffu? Bad a/v cable? Loose speaker wire? By the way-my online support is getting better and better. Charter cable has live chat, as does Sony and Motorola. Good luck. Also, I can't think of a single setting I've changed with the Panny. other than assigning digital audio out settings. DEcoder setting? Your Panny?
