External 500gb hard drive not readable

Seagate external 500gb hard drive was suddenly not readable. It is visible in the device manager and at the computer management with a volume of 2.048 gb (instead of 500) and shows 0 data. The disk starts when you plug it and stops after a while. It seems to work mechanically but no logical connection.

Check the partition size in Disk Management (if running Win7 - download a free Partition Manager if not) and see if the system is seeing the partition correctly. Seagate has recovery software available on their website but you may just have to repartition and reformat.

I USED MY FREE AGENT DESK EXTERNAL DRIVE 500GB ON MY MAC GOT A NEW DELL AND CONNECTED THE DRIVE...IT SHOWS UP BUT I CANNOT OPEN IT PLEASE HELP

if you still can see files on the Hard disk from MAC, then the reason of being unabe to explore your file from MS windows is that your hard was initialized by MAC with a format that windows cannot read.
move your data from external hard disk to your MAC then format your hard disk from windows OS with FAT32 format .this format is readable on both MAC and WINDOWS

Seagate 500GB FREEAGENT DESKTOP 7200RPM EXTERNAL USB 20 HARD DRIVE 16MB it just stoped working in the middle of the movie, complete blackout, tryed conect to another PC nothing came up, what it could be...

Try this:

1. Turn off the power supply to the hard drive.
2. Turn off your PC/laptop.
3. Connect the hard drive to the PC/laptop.
4. Turn on both devices.

It worked with mine.

You could also try installing Seagate Manager which can check for errors on the drive.

How can I power up my seagate 7200.11 500gb external h/drive to my pc

If your OS supports this device ... plug in the power supply to proper voltage ... and connect the end to the device. Use a appropriate USB cable from the back of the Seagate and plug into an available USB connection on your computer.

Segate 1TB not working with Windows 2003 Server

Is this an internal disk, or an external backup device? Two possible routes:-

Internal disk:-
Ok first thing: Does the BIOS see the drive? If not, try flashing the Server's BIOS to the latest version. Check that the system will support disks >500Gb. Try turning on LBA in the BIOS. It shouldnt affect it, but has been known to.
If its not showing here, its either faulty, dodgy cables, or not supported.

If its visible in the bios, great. Make sure you have at least one and preferably all the service packs installed. Gold (RC) only supports 500Gb drives.
Make sure you have Chipset drivers installed for the mobo. If its visible in the disk management console, then create a small disk, NTFS.

External backup device:-
Either you will need to install the software in 'compatibility mode' for xp, OR
dont use their software at all. Just plug the disk in, and it should appear as a removable device. Then use the windows backup tool to create a backup file on the external disk, and run a backup using that.
