I found that after replacing the batteries, the power button on the reader did not work. I did however have luck after I connected the Reader/Pen to the laptop, updated the s/w on the reader and updated the s/w on the laptop. Then the reader was able to interact with one of the books just fine.

My daughter's pen stopped working this week. I tried plugging it in to the computer, and new batteries. This did not work. What did work perfectly was opening the device up to expose the lens and simply cleaning it. Toward the end there is a infrared bulb and (receiver) behind this lens. If this is dirty it will stop responding to the books. Hope this helps you as mine works perfectly now.

I also have this problem! Not sure exactly how to open to clean the light. I don't see the light shining when the tip is pressed either. My son has only used his tag pen for maybe a month or so before it messed up! And it was an expensive Christmas gift!
