SOURCE: Smeg main oven failure

problem is almost certainly the circular element. these sometimes fail with obvious damage but not always. check continuity across the element to be sure. you are right about element fixing. there is no reason why the design should'nt allow removal from the front as many do but i suppose the guys who make these things don't have to fix them.

I am a recently retired appliance engineer of 20 years sounds like pure coincidence, check the fan for circuit at terminals, and / or check for movement of blades, that you have not got fan jammed, replace fan motor unit if needed, still cheaper than a call out if i have helped rate me work with safety all the time, unplug at all times when working on any item

SOURCE: I have a smeg A42-5 oven and the digital clock as

Hi There
I have found this for to read and hope this will help you. Let me know how it goes.
The clock stopped The non-electronic clocks on electric range/ovens often don't last long. That's a problem, because the clock is essential to the self-cleaning and timed-bake features. Clocks are rarely repairable--you usually just have to replace them. Electronic clocks have been more reliable. But, they're often integrated with several other features of the range/oven. So when the clock develops a defect, it often renders the entire oven and broiler inoperative. The electronic clock is usually integrated with a circuit board, and the touchpad that holds the buttons you press is often a separate component. If your electronic clock is defective, you may need to replace the touchpad, circuit board, or both. Although these may be expensive, they aren't usually very complicated to replace.
Thank you for writing to fix ya.
Best Regards Richard

I have a Tecnik Range cooke that was in the house when i bought it. The secong oven has no cover for the heating element at the top so everything I put in browns at the top. Should this oven have a metal plate underneath so that I can use it as a conventional oven or should it be like that

Smeg oven stopped working

This tutorial will show you how to check your Smeg element and how to replace your Smeg cooker element.
Here are the 3 main faults to look for in your oven or cooker that is not heating
  1. Your oven will not work until the clock/timer has been re-set after replacing an oven element or tripping the electrical supply. Consult your Smeg manual.
  2. If your Oven is not getting hot or heating up it could be a faulty element, if the fan in the oven is running and the thermostat light is on, this will lead us to believe that the element has gone faulty. With grills the thermostat light should come on there should be heat, if not then this could be the grill element or the thermostat.
  3. When you turn the oven on, the household electrical supply trips on the Rcd (this is the earth trip in the fuse board sometimes called the breaker tripping) your fan oven element has gone to earth and needs replacing.
