Don't install the new iPhone OS, it will cause this error. I bought a iPhone 3g from AT&T 2 days ago, fired up iTunes yesterday, where it indicated a new update (iPhone's 2.1 OS) was available. I installed it, but the install didn't take and iTunes said the iPhone needed to be restored. But, when I attempted this restore, it didn't take. Plus, to make matters worse, AT&T wouldn't exchange the phone and said that I had to make an appointment with Apple for an exchange. I then asked if I could return it because, the phone didn't work, and they were going to charge a 10% restocking fee....not sure why they would restock a broken iPhone. I'm a long-term Blackberry customer and will probably go back unless someone can help me fix this problem easily. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

Try restoring in DFU mode, which is different than recovery mode. I happened to stumble across it while trying to restore an iPhone 3G that a user unplugged in the middle of the 3.1 update. It kept showing an error of 1611 or 13 and wouldn't restore in recovery mode. I found this DFU mode option and the restore worked fine. The DFU mode keeps the iPhone OS from loading, so you don't run into as many compatibility problems. Go into DFU mode, then try restoring the phone and see if that works.
http://techierambles.blogspot.com/2009/09/restore-iphone-with-error-13-or-1611-in.html
To enter DFU mode:
1. Connect your iPhone to your computer
2 . Turn iPhone off. You may have to hold the power and home buttons down together to force the phone off
3. Once the phone is off, hold the power and home buttons together for 10 seconds exactly
4. After 10 seconds, release the power button but keep holding home until the computer recognizes that a USB device was plugged in
5. iTunes should detect your iPhone correctly, and also allow you to restore to the factory default settings

SOURCE: trying to restore my iphone

Try this:

  1. Plug/connect your device to a computer (PC or Mac)
  2. Turn it OFF
  3. Press and hold the POWER and HOME buttons together for EXACTLY 10seconds
  4. Release the POWER button but keep holding the HOME button until the computer beeps indicating that a USB device is recognized.
  5. Open iTunes and restore your device.

Warning: Restoring will delete all data on your device but this is the only way for you to recover it.

If you don't get it at first, try holding the buttons for lesser time or see the other procedures on my tip (link below):

SOURCE: my iphone wont restore error

Try restoring from DFU mode. To enter DFU, shut down the phone and connect it to the computer. Then hold the power button for 3 seconds. Without releasing the power button, hold down the home button for 10 seconds. Then release the power button but keep holding home until iTunes recognizes the device in recovery mode. If you did it right, the screen should be black. Then just click restore. This should help, but if it also doesn't work you may have a hardware issue. In that case, you should take it in to Apple for repairs. Good luck!

How to fix Error 23, 28, 29, 1011, 1012, 1611

Error 23, 28, 29, 1011, 1012, 1611: These errors may indicate a hardware issue with your device. The best test is to Try and restore from another cpu. Follow the steps in this article and also attempt to restore while connected to a known-good computer and network to isolate this issue to the device. If the IMEI or MAC address is missing or is a default value, this can also confirm a hardware issue.

My ipod touch 4th gen says it can not be restored to an unknown error (1611) i dont know how to fix it?

try updating it on a different computer on a different network if that does not work you will need to call apple as it would be a hardware issue (this worked for my iphone 3g and my ipod touch 4g).

Hey Chee, Usually an iphone with liquid damage may cause damage to internals that may go unnoticed if it is able to work. Depending on the error message you get when restoring with itunes may mean different things.

  • 1604 is just to check your usb cable to make sure its directly (not through a hub) connected to a usb 2.0
  • 1611 and 23 are usually hardware issues that cannot be solved with a restore

Im getting an unknown error (1611) when i try to restore my iphone. i have latest itunes & windows 7

Hi there,

This error may indicate a hardware issue with your device. If the MAC address or the IMEI is the default value (00 499901 064000 0), this can also confirm a hardware issue, to find these go to settings, general & about.

If you can get an appointment in an Apple store they can try a "known good" network connection & connector and try to restore the phone for you but if not it looks like it may be a hardware issue within the phone. If your still withing your warrenty give Apple a ring they'll sort it for you.
