Battery ran flat on my 'R' reg VW Golf gti while I was away in Australia. The alarm was disconnected a couple of years ago but now the immobiliser seems to have triggered as there is no spark or petrol feed. Is there any way to bypass the alarm/immobiliser?

Sometimes it depends on the type of allarm, if it is factory fitted they are a nightmare to do as most of the wireing for the allarm is intergrated into the loom, where as if it is an after marked alarm ( one fitted later on ) it shouldnt be to bad but still a long and complicated job to find all the wires and reconnect the originals bypassing the immobiliser/alarm if you are a complete novice this should not be attempted as you could immobilise the car completely, best thing for you to do is get an auto electrician to have a look at it for you, sorry its not much help

Is it thatcham immobiliser in VW golf s v 1.6 2001 y reg

thatcham alarms were only fitted by dealers as aftermarket items for 10%off insurance premiums discount although this discount was stopped soon after they found out that thatcham alarms were causing lots of trouble with cars being immobilised for no reason and found to be unfixable by VW dealers.....you only have the factory standard alarm, unless YOU have a certificate showing that one was fitted.(insurance companies ask this question so that if you have an accident and you said yes, they can kick your claim into touch.....believe me any excuse.....)

If exterior lights are left on, alarm doesn't

Imobiliser problem

If im not mistaken, your car should have an alarm reset/override.Below the steering column,on the dash should be a slot where you put your remote transmitter to deactivate the alarm. If that works, you then need to have your remote checked and coded by a vw dealer.Good luck.

Mk3 golf gti 8v can not swich the genuin alarm imobilisor off with the fob tryed new batterys in both fobs dont now if it has lost its cooding or somthing? car has bean standing for about 6 weeks

Check that the key still has the chip inside. If not then this can be solved by having a 'virgin key' coded up to your car using the long number on the back of the clocks.
Also try disconnecting the battery for a few mins, reconnect, then use the normal method to start it.
If this fails then its a case of following the wires back from the immobiliser and disconnecting.
