sorry buddy, i thot that you were using the gateway lappy...
anyway the Toshiba Satellite A105-S1013 could support up to 2GB max RAM using DDR2 SDRAM - 533.0 MHz, PC2-4200, check the specs of the memory you purchased if it matches the specs required by your laptop...

From what I understand, windows 7 requires atleast 1 gb of ram to run properly, judging by your standard system specs you have 512 mb of ram. Unless you have added some ram or plan to add some to your system then no I dont believe you will be able to upgrade and run windows 7 efficiently.
Check out mo bo specs - you may have exceeded mo bo capacity. Or try a different memory stick - all memory are not created the same - some will work in one machine and not another. Experiment if you are within specs.
Looking at the specs, the max is 2gb for your Toshiba. According to this website, its only a 256mb ddr sdram. So my guess is you only have 1 slot for the ram. I'd go with a 2gb ram if you can afford it, 1gb just don't cut it in todays technology.
I believe its the PC2700 model, so find a 1gb or 2gb PC2700 @ 333mhz and you should be set.
your Toshiba Satellite M35X-S311 has the following memory configuration
Configured with 512MB
The maximum memory you can have is 2048MB (Max),
2 memory slots using 1024MB PC2700 DDR333 SDRAM 2.5V SODIMM Memory modules (Both slots may be occupied). Go to a store and request for this memory specification and you will have 2GB of memory for all the programs you have listed here. Good Luck!
Okay, lets troubleshoot this:
1)Does your laptop run on battery alone ?
yes )test your jacks continuity to the motherboard using a continuity tester or Digital Multimeter.
a)test between the center contact and the motherboard.
b)test between the outside metal cover of the jack ,and the motherboard.
c)If either of these fails continuity, replace the jack.
2)does your laptop now power up on AC ?
yes)Stop
No)Try the BIOS upgrade.
The system uses shared video memory, so it will always show less memory than actually installed.
It's a good machine, but needs all memory it can get for Vista.
Good luck
