How to open Bel 980 case

Hello there :
if you have tried to adjust the volume on the unit and still have no volume then your volume controle know b may be faulty or the speaker inside of the unit may be bad in this case you would have to remove the 4 or 6 screws that hold the 2 halves together and seperate the 2 halves nd inspect the internal wiring to see if there is a wire that has came off of the speaker if so it will need to be soldered back into pla ok?

This most likely is due to a blown internal speaker which has shorted across its voice coil rather than becoming an open circuit. Bel/Escort now uses special "high temp" speakers which resolve any failing speaker issues due to higher temperatures. I assume that your STi is out of warranty. Yet, it will be worth it ($80) to have the speaker replaced and to have your STi flashed with the latest firmware which also gives the STi a true audio ramp-up rather than just the original slow or fast audio beeps to indicate the strength of the detected radar. The new firmware also includes slight performance enhancements, and includes better filtering for Autoscan mode. This latter enhanced Autoscan filtering makes the STi noticeably quieter while driving around town.

Sounds to me like the internal speaker went, this is actually common on radar detectors. Although 9yrs is a lot longer than most will last. If you are handy with a soldering gun you can replace the internal speaker with a new one and get it working again. However be sure to take the unit apart before getting a new speaker so you can match up the size as it varies.

BEL no longer offer upgrade or repair for the BEL 980 detector

On mine you can barely hear it on the 9 setting. I put in a different speaker but no difference. I did look up the number on the IC chip near where the speaker connects (34119) and it came back to a 500 mW audio amplifier, so you could probably replace that and fix it. I think it's what you call a flat-pack style chip. Not as bad as surface mount but will still require a tiny soldering iron. I think the actual part number ended up being MC34119D and should cost a dollar or less.

It is 12 volt (or at least mine is). You should be able to connect directly to a fused supply, but I would advise checking output with a meter.

I have the same thing wrong with mine ! I put it in my other car and it works fine. Found out it was my alternater was not working right! Hope this works for you

Call Beltronics tell them you have an RX65 out of warranty. They charge about $65. When I did mine I sent them only the detector and they also set me a new cord & suction cups.
