My kindle will not charge. I plug it in and there is a yellow light where the charger jack goes into the kindle but the kindle does not show charging.

Press and holding down the power button for 20 seconds or more. Then turn the device back on by hitting the power button again. If this doesn't work the first time, you can try holding the button down for 30 seconds or more.

Removing the kindle from the leather cover w/light (purchased separately) , did the trick for me.
It wouldn't charge (the yellow light stayed on).
But when I removed the cover, it charged in about one hour!
I read about this fix in Amazon reviews for the Kindle.

If you've explored all options with software settings and If you're outof warranty, you can try to open the kindle and replace the battery.There is a Kindle Repair Guide that shows you how to take it apat. There are services that can do it for you. Kindle Repair.

No you will not lose your books. If this doesn't work call amazon customer support and they will walk you through the process of getting it replaced.
