I have the same problem and took mine apart. There is a steel cable running from the resistance controller servo to the magnetic brake assembly and inside the assembly two more that attach to the brake shoes. In my case both of the small inside cables broke but if the main outside cable or any part along that chain broke it would have the same effect. I've emailed about replacements. Take care if you open this beast. It's a bugger. Take lots of snaps along the way sow you can see how it goes back together.

I am having the exact same issue. I can use the elliptical on level 1 up to level 8 and barely notice the differencde. I am hoping someone out there has been able to solve this problem as this elliptical is nothing but heavy dead weight at this point.
