Laptop boots up, shows dell logo and loading bar (first few seconds of the bootup), then goes black and windows logo can be very faintly seen as it continues to bootup and wait for me to click to get to main area. Eventually, it stops booting up noise but the screen is black and impossible to see what to click next. It stays on and the harddrive/comp has on noises, just can't seen anything on the screen. It sounds like it's working just something wrong with the screen. If I let it "rest" for a bit, sometimes I can get the screen to light up after rebooting from an off state. If it goes into a standby mode for too long then it stays black. If I try to reboot then it does the black screen thing all over again. Now it's pretty much staying black when I reboot. I don't want to damage it by continuing to reboot and shut off repeatedly just to get a 1 out of X number of times opportunity to get the screen working again. Is it the screen standby closing mechanism? Is it a video card? The monitor? What should I do? Thank you! :)
Ur unit is overheating turn off and unplug and let cool down, clean vents around fan intake (under unit) and around top each side of keyboard when cool enough plug back in and listen for fan operation while booting up if no fan it may be stuck or burnt up and may need replacement but ur biggest problem will be the hard drive if it was overheated for to long could or is damaged good luck hope ur lucky and that it just got hot
u can find the part at a local electronic store, ebay, online electronic / computer part site, or dell itself---in the meantime if u really need the laptop while ur looking for the part u can pickup a cheap cooling stand that has the fans at top corners 4 about $12 --- if ur good at soldering u will need to shut down unit unplug than flip over laptop remove battery u will need a small philips screwdriver to remove the retaining screws at edges unsnap and remove cover unscrew fan and if u can undo wires remove if not cut and solder wires and wrap solder connection w/shrink wrap tube reassemble good luck

Thank you for taking the time to provide an answer. Will try that. :)
Dear Wiz, Can you recommend a site to go to for instructions on how to
properly replace the fan? To remove casing and such. UPDATE: When I
turned it on again...I listened for the fan and did not notice it turn
on. I flipped it over and looked at it and it was not moving. My
vents look very clean. I unscrewed what I could and used compressed
air and wiped up any visible dust. It's pretty clean. I think you're
right the fan is toast. How do I replace it? What's a good place to
search out a low cost replacement? Online instructions on how to
replace? Thank you again for your time! :)
