There should be a switch near the bottom, the same switch that allows you to lock it.
You just pull it the other way and hold it down. A message should display that it is shutting off.
Perform a reset as per the manual and download the firmware utility. Install the firmware utility, connect your player to your computer and re-flash the player with the firmware.
Check the lock switch on the player. It's meant to prevent the buttons from being pressed while playing. If that doesn't work, contact the manufacturer.
Hi jblair,
Are you sure the player has not been locked or put on hold? Generally there is a sliding button on the side or back to activate Hold. See if it has been accidentally put on. This doesn't seem to be a software problem.
I had this same problem on another RCA player.. with no instructions manual it was hard to figure out what keys locked meant. Then I noticed a little slider on the side of the player, it has a little icon of a pad lock on it. Once I slid this back, the keys lock problem went away and I was able to listen to my music once again.
My best guess of what keys locked means.. you don't want you mp3 player to turn on when you put it in your pocket with your keys, so you change the slider to be locked, when your sit down and your keys are pressing against your on button, the mp3 player will shut off... as we all have experienced in frustration.. saving your battery.
Perhaps RCA should make this slider bright orange so it pops out and does not blend in so much, or they should put it right next to the on button.
The unit has a hold button which when you accidentally slide to one side, will "hold" or lock up the unit, to unlock this, simply slide the hold button to the opposite side.
