Using Device Manager, look to see it laptop is sensing the presence of the cd-rom. (if it is not on the list, try removing / rebooting / and then reinstalling cd-rom) If it shows on the list, click to open it's properties and then delete the drivers for cd-rom (this will cause the laptop to reload the drivers on the next reboot) if it still doesn't work, go to micosoft updates and try to update the drivers there. If it still malfunctions, then the cd-rom may be faulty. Try replacing it with another cd-rom and see what you get.
