I recently got a (very good) procedure for replacing the right side hinge on a T41. Now the left side is also broken. I have the description for removing the LCD bezel in the other answer, so I don't need that.
Is the left side hinge replacement similar? Will I have to remove any of the plastic or case parts other than the LCD bezel to replace both hinges? If so, what is that procedure?
Should I pay the additional money for a new set of hinges or should a used set be adequate.
The reason I ask is that I have had 570s for years and the hinge setup on them is terrible. They wear out and can stop working altogether suddenly. Paying extra for new replacement hinges for that model would always be preferable to me. But the hinge setup for T41s looks very different. Is this something I should worry about?
Yes, I saw that guide. It is very clear about how to remove the lcd bezel. But the inverter is exposed when the LCD bezel is removed and the hinges are attached to the main case as well as to the lcd. My question was: do I have to remove any other plastic or case parts to replace the hinges and, if so, how. It is unclear to me from the IBM repair guide.
Also, should I be concerned with using used hinges or are the T41 hinges stout enough that they don't usually fail like the 570 ones do. Yes, I saw that guide. You can get replacement parts for this laptop, however it can get expensive. At the end of the day, you can use a super glue that is safe to use around electrical parts, but you might be better off just using an external monitor if you don't need to carry your laptop around.
To answer Meyerson's questions:
My symptoms did not include papers jamming in the ADF -- in fact, the ADF didn't work at all due to the broken left hinge. :( Also, I don't recall having any unusual problems with the ADF jamming frequently before the hinge broke to the point where the ADF didn't work at all.
I obtained the replacement ADF left hinge assembly by searching online for a parts dealer. I believe I ended up ordering the part from Precision Roller.
I hope this helps,

I'm sure you could get these hinges from IBM, but no idea as to their cost. They are available on e-bay for $8-$35 (depending on whether you want 1 or a set) plus $8-$10 shipping.
As far as replacement. You will have to remove the Top cover assembly from the base of the PC. If you need help with that, just let me know and I'll talk you through that.
To replace the hinge, you will have to disassemble the Top cover assembly. The screws that you will need to remove are covered by small black adhesive covers. There are 3 round ones along the bottom of the bezel, 2 square ones up at the top of the bezel (to the left of the white LED keyboard light, and 6 (trapezoidal shaped) on the outside of the cover (3 on each side). Carefully remove those covers and the screws that are under the covers. Keep track of where the screws should go back in.
The actual bezel is held into the top cover with some internal snaps. Start at one of the corners, run a knife blade along the seam (between the cover and bezel) and you will hear each fastener "snap" as you slide the blade past it. Once the bezel is loose, lift it off of the LDC screen. There is one additional screw that is located up in the upper right hand corner. That one will need to be removed, also.
Gently lift the right hand side of the LCD assembly a couple of inches and place something of appropriate size to hold it in the raised position. You will see 2 additional screws that hold the hinge to the LCD assemble. Remove those and the old hinge will come right off.
Position the new hinge and replace the two screws that you had just removed. Reverse the removal sequence to reassemble the display.
Before you start snapping the bezel back into place, check to make sure that the two cover catches (those hook things, up at the top of the LCD assembly) are both operational. The link going to the left hand one tends to easily fall off.
This procedure should take in the neighborhood of 45 minutes to an hour.
