It's very possible the printhead wasn't installed correctly. It's pretty easy to get it wrong, as there are two pins on the latched printhead bracket that have to fit into two holes on the printhead itself. You have to get the alignment of these pins and holes just perfect before you tighten the screw. You have to make sure the aluminum plate on the printhead is sitting flat against the printer's printhead bracket before you turn the screw on top of the bracket.
The spring that slides from side to side should be in the center. If thet doesn't give you clear labels, move the spring toward the faded area. You shouldn't have to move it more than 1/4 of the way into the label.
