Typically, you're contagious from 1 day before you have any symptoms. You stay that way for 5 to 7 days after you start feeling sick. Kids and people may be able to spread the virus for even longer, until all of their symptoms fade. Most of the time, it's through droplets in the air.

How does the flu shot actually work?

The flu shot causes anti bodies to develop in your body that then protect you against infection from the flu virus. It takes about 2 weeks for the vaccine to work and whilst it can cause fatigue and muscle aches, it can't 'give you' the flu.

Does the flu vaccine cover you for all types of flu?

The vaccine protects against 3 of the main flu strains; the two type A flu bugs and one type B. These are the most common and virulent of the strains. It doesn't mean you won't still get a different strain of flu, it just lowers the chances.

Are there different types of flu shots available?

: Yes, there are four main types of flu shots available:

1; The traditional flu shot that is injected into the muscle. It contains flu-particles but will not give you the flu.

2; The high-dose shot that is the same as the shot above but contains a higher dose

3; The intradermal flu shot that contains the same vaccine as the others but can be injected just skin deep and can be used on people age 18 to 64.

4; The nasal spray vaccine that can be used on people age 2 to 49. It contains a live, weakened flu virus.

Your doctor will advise you which of the vaccines is best for you.

What is the flu shot? Everyone seems to be talking about it.

The flu shot is the flu vaccine that is given once a year to prevent the flu. It's primarily given to children, people with sicknesses and the elderly but given how many people are hospitalized with flu each year, it's becoming increasingly popular for people to get the shot no matter their age.

How can I tell if my husband actually has the flu or just a cold? He is complaining a lot but I dont know whether to take it seriously or not.

You can have a really bad head cold and feel rotten but it's still not the flu. The symptoms of the flu are similar in many ways to a cold but usually just a lot worse. Especially the fever, body aches which are more intense with flu than a common cold.
