There are many times a brand new motor out of the box is defective, or they gave you the wrong voltage motor... If it has been verified it is connected correctly and correct voltage, then take it back to supply house and have them test it or obtain another one

Testimonial: "It was wired right, and I thought, like you, that maybe the motor was defective. However, I put power to it, spun it a few times and it started right up and has been working fine since then! Probably something on the brushes or armature that needed cleaning off. Fixed! ;-)"

Verify the motor leads have power. Test the motor for electrical continuity or ohms.

Sounds like you wired it wrong.

SOURCE: GE Central A/C Unit about 30 yrs old; condenser fan stops after a short time.

I gather that it is the outdoor fan motor that runs a bit then stops.

Fan motors that stop by themselves are overheating and going into self-protect. The fact that you replaced the motor and capacitor opens up a whole world of "which wire is in the wrong place". I could do this if I could see it, but I can't see it. You're probably going to wind up calling a service man to sort out the wiring.

SOURCE: Outdoor fan motor is not running fast enough?

Thanks for the suggestion. I figured out the problem. The replacement fan motor I bought was general fan motor. it had 5 wires. Two of them went to the capacitor (this unit has combo capacitor, 3 leg). I followed the schematic diag on the motor and connected one leg to the C and the other leg to the FAN on capacitor. what was happening, the start winding was working against the run winding in the motor. Once I switch the wires in the capacitor, fan ran at full speed. thanks again for your reply.

How much will parts and labor cost?

A 3.5-ton Carrier CK....OK the run capacitor will be a 370 volt variety, likely 20 bucks tops....given that this is SINGLE capacitor dedicated to the compressor ONLY. A BIT more if (as is likely) it is a 3-terminal compressor/condenser motor capacitor. I assume you mean 'contactor' and this toy should be another $30+/- $5. (Hopefully the diagnosis you got was correct!) That aside, MOST folks in the residential realm use some sort of "flat-rate" system. Replacing the capacitor is ONE job and the contactor is another. If this is a commercial property (OR if you are aligned with a commercial entity), look for a contractor that will make the repair on a "time and materials" basis. One trip, 2 parts...time element should be MINIMAL. Good luck!

Replace compacitor on Carrier 5 ton 3 phase AC

Your 3 phase unit should not have a capacitor. I'm guessing it's single phase. If it's a single capacitor than the compressor should not be going to it also. To test the motor, common to start plus common to run should equal the ohms you get between start and run. For instance, 1.2 ohms+ 2.2 ohms= 3.4 ohms. Follow the wiring diagram on the inside of the door, send model number!!

Can the compressor run w/ a 'blown' capacitor?

The capacitor starts the motor. You would have had some other problem had the motor not started. The A/C ran until the failing capacitor no longer provided the ability to start the motor at which point your A/C died.
My A/C bulged both its capacitors 2+yrs ago and it's been running ever since they were replaced, no problem.
I think you're OK.

38CKC036 Air Conditioner: outside fan will not come on makes a humming noise...

If the humming is your compressor running (feel the large copper line going into the unit, it should feel cold aftter a few minutes of run time) then the fan motor or the capacitor or both need to be replaced, check for voltage to the fan motor when the unit is "humming" if it has voltage and will not start replace the fan motor and the capacitor. hope this helps.

A/c unit not cooling

if it is making strange noises during operation it is going out on high pressure due to the condenser fan not running , check the capacitor for the fan to make sure it has not expanded also check if motor is getting proper voltage , is capacitor is good and motor has proper voltage supplied then you have a bad motor and should be replaced with new capacitor.

AC blower runs but compressor will not.

It could be the CONTACTOR. It could be dirty and when the system calls to run, the contactor won't make contact and complete the circuit. Worse case scenario, compressor is siezed up. If you hear a clicking noise at the condensing unit where the compressor is located, that could be the overload protector clicking and breaking the circuit if the compressor is seized up. Good luck. I hope it is a contactor or a capacitor.

Squeeling noise coming from AC, compressor is on, fan not turning

The squealing noise is coming from the compressor. This noise is common when the unit reaches extreamly high pressures. The pressure is most likely high because the fan is not running. Since you can spin the motor it could be that the motor has damaged windings. Leave the unit off until the repairs are made to ensure no further damage to the compressor. You will need a multi meter and some experience reading wiring diagrams to properly diagnose the system. You can perform an amp draw on the motor to see if it is in spec. You can measure the volts to the motor and see if they are in spec. Finally the contactor can be measured with the proper meter to see if it is working properly.

My suggestion is to have the Motor and capacitor both replaced. Also inspect the wiring in the condenser electrical compartment for any signs of damage or burning.
