I bought a 42" Sharp Aquos and an Onkyo TX-SR605 receiver as the first
two components in my burgeoning A/V setup. I have not
yet purchased speakers and was hoping to just use the TV's speakers in
the meanwhile and use the receiver as a glorified switch until I can
afford some speakers after the holidays.
My Cable Box and my Tivo all connected to the receiver via composite
audio and S-video (separate cables). My Wii is connected entirely via
composite. The Xbox 360 is connected to the receiver via HDMI.
From the receiver to the TV itself, I am running a single HDMI cable.
We hooked everything up yesterday and for the most part it went really
well. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get the analog audio to pass
through my receiver to the TV via an HDMI cable. So for most of my
devices I can't hear any sound.
The Xbox works flawlessly. I get sound and video with nice clarity,
etc. For the other devices, I get video, but I cannot get any sound.
Is it simply that the analog audio going into the receiver cannot be
transmitted to the TV via HDMI? The receiver "upconverts" video
signals, so I thought it would do the same for sound.
The problem will hopefully be alleviated when I get some speakers and
the HD cable box so I can run straight up HDMI all the time, but for
now, I would like to be able to actually hear what I am watching.
I have a DVD player, dish network box, and wii all hooked up to my tx-sr605 with RCA cables (red/white/yellow) and i get no audio over the HDMI that runs out to my tv or to the center channel speaker (i only have the center channel hooked up so far) is it true that the sound from the RCA cables just simply wont be transmitted via HDMI?I have a DVD player, dish network box, and wii all hooked up to my tx-sr605 with RCA cables (red/white/yellow) and i get no audio over the HDMI that runs out to my tv or to the center channel speaker (i only have the center channel hooked up so far) is it true that the sound from the RCA cables just simply wont be transmitted via HDMI?

You have said the correct thing HDMI is digital therefore Analog will not pass.
You might have RCA audio outputs on your cable box so either send them into the TV from cable or into the AMP then use AMP volume to listen to TV audio (select unused input and remember it is for TV) the key is to remember that cable box will drive the initial vol so raise or lower cable vol then use AMP vol to obtain desired volume.

Your receiver appears to have a digital optical input, so no converter would be needed, just an optical fiber cable (TOSLINK) between the two optical ports. However, the manual for your receiver states that several functions don't work unless there is also an analog connection. If you must have those, you can use an HDMI audio extractor. You may also need an adapter cable to convert 3.5 mm stereo audio to a pair of RCA phono plugs to make the analog connection.
Not sure what unable to connect means..but I will assume you have the correct cable.
First make sure you have plugged the from the HDMI cable from the DVD play into the IN 1 HDMI port on the back of your Onkyo
On the Receiver
Enter the Setup mode
Select INPUT OUTPUT ASSIGN
Next make sure the HDMI monitor out is set to YES on the Receiver
Monitor out HDMI Monitor - YES
Next you need to assign the HDMI INPUT to DVD
Select INPUT OUTPUT ASSIGN
HDMI INPUT
DVD - IN1
CBL/SAT - IN2
This may be your issue.
Next step would be to verify your television input settings.
Goof information. Have you eliminated or proven the Onkyo as a cause by going direct to the projector? Try another Input and/or Output. It's best to know which component is broken and if it's limited to a specific subset of its function.
Settings are also indicated. Run through the video setup again. If it just stopped, what preceded it?
Are your DVD and cable actually going to the Onkyo first and then to the TV? I am assuming it is, if you listen to the Onkyo when watching a DVD or cable.
The Onkyo receiver you have has 2 hdmi inputs and 1 hdmi output.
Does your Xbox360 have an hdmi output and that is what you want to connect to the Onkyo? Some do and some don't.
If your Xbox has a hdmi output and you are already using the 2 hdmi inputs on the Onkyo, you can not connect the Xbox using the hdmi, you have no more hdmi to connect to, so you must go thru one of the other inputs of the Onkyo.
The hdmi has the video and audio together, the other video options do not. you would need to run seperate audio cables as well. Your Xbox should have a composite video (yellow RCA jack) output or a component video (1 red, 1 blue, 1 green RCA jack) output.
When you connect the Xbox thru, lets say the composite video of the Onkyo , you will also need to connect the audio from the Xbox to the Onkyo on the same input. It should be right next to the yellow RCA jack or right under it. They are 2 RCA jacks, one red and one white.
You will then need to connect the composite output of the Onkyo to the composite input of the TV.
When connecting like this, you will also need to select the composite input on your TV with your remote for your TV. Your TV should have an input button that lets you go thru all the different inputs to it.
you can also use the component video from the Xbox if it has that. But you must also run the audio to the Onkyo as well to the corresponding audio inputs of the component video input on the Onkyo.
This may sound a little confusing, but remember that the hdmi has the audio and video in one cable, the other video options do not, so you must run additional cables for the audio to the Onkyo from the Xbox.
Also remember whichever video you use from the Xbox to the Onkyo, you must also run that same video from the Onkyo to the TV and then switch the TV over to that input when you want to watch the Xbox on the TV
AT THE START OF THE SET UP MENU CLICK ON IN/OUT ASSIGN.THEN MONITOR OUT APPERS,THEN HDMI NO,FLICK THIS TO ON.IFF YOU GET PICTURE AND NO SOUND GO TO THE HARDWARE SET UP AND DOWN TO HDMI AND SWITCH AUDIO OFF.
