Your machine (Bernina 600 Record) has most likely frozen (seized) due to lack of regular maintenance. Don't panic. It can be fixed with a lot of elbow grease, good quality oil and a hairdryer. The following method has resurrected several Berninas I've picked up as "nonworking."
Unfortunately Bernina did have a quality problem with the power supply 'L'-prints on this and a couple of other similar models with the consequence that they have extended the warranty on that part. It sounds like your machine may be suffering from one of these failures ... the 5 volt supply drops to 3.5 volts and the machine just 'freezes' with symptoms you are describing. I'd advise getting it back to a Bernina service agent and mention this warranty issue and hopefully an updated replacement power supply will cure the problem.
The Bernina website has software uppgrades also for Artlink. It is well explained for which model and which software. One has to log in though to download any software.
