There is a small spring in the VCR that helps open the door. When the tape comes up on the track it pushes on the spring. Sometimes they fall off. Or the tab that it leans on breaks off. In this case you can attempt to glue it back on but most likely it will fall off again. The door can come off if you need it to. You will have to take the cover off to do this. This will have no affect on using the VCR. It will still continue to work fine. If removed. This will help you get your tape back each time. I hope that this was helpful in some way.

Tapping the top as you hit "OPEN" works as outlined by BEST SOLUTION above, but not really hard. This applies to the Lite-On LVW5005X I had the same problem with. This is the worst DVD recorder and has very poor sound quality output, and plays in my other Lite-On of higher quality w/low sound volume. Timer is also very limited in number (5) & day-settings. Tried but failed to record on 16x DVD, too. CD-R recording very, very limited so i don't bother using that function..
