Lite-On LVC-9016G DVD drawer does not open

the rather in-elegant solution I use is to lift the unit half inch or so, and drop it. the door then opens and you can insert the disc. if a disc is in the unit, it opens just fine.

Keep getting "Fail" on blank discs

The LVW-5005 DVD Recorder came with a list of recommended brands for each type of disc, and they are all different in all categories. Some brands are recommended for CDs, some for DVDs, etc. They are not the same in any catagory. Most of the ones I bought were not on the list, because I couldn't find those listed anywhere in my neighborhood here in California. Some worked before, but are not working well now. Some have never worked, and some are failing intermittently. The INVALID DISC message comes up on both units often, but when it comes up on the LVW-5005 unit the DISC eject feature will not eject. The open close door stays shut and says it is open, but sticks and keeps trying to reread the disc. You actually have to tip the machine down to let gravity help, and then turn it on and off and on and off and it finally opens and drops out the invalid disc. The LVC-9016G unit says "change disc", or gets stuck on "Preparing". Sometimes it prepares, and then I can actually record, but when I try to load it later..... FAIL! This too is INTERMITTENT. GOD I HATE THAT WORD!!!!I am not good a taking machines apart, and I have a MAC system 10.5 computer, and the firmware update seems to be geared to the WINDOWS PC. HELP?? Is there anything I can do.Also IS THERE A LIST OF PREFERRED BRANDS of the media for the LVC-9016G model. It may be the same as the list for the LVW-5005 unit, except the that unit is supposed to record on CDs as well. NOT SURE> None are working consistantly. The other idea that I had is that the newer DVD-R and DVD-RW or the DVD+R and DVD+RW discs have a heavier technology and these older burners (2 years makes it older, I guess....) and seem to no longer like them. The 6 hour SLP I always set them to record on in the past, may no longer be valid. The 4x, 8X 16X etc. may not work either. Since I don't understand what that means, and we only have access to what is available to buy, I am at a loss there too. I am logical, but not technically educated in this technology. I come at this with psychology, not technology... :-)I have the LVC-9016G for 2 years, and the other bought at COSTCO only a year ago. Is $300 worth of equipment already obsolete?I have not hacked or touched anything. I may need to buy another lense cleaning disc. I have a memorex one, but when I put that in it said INVALID DISC, and will not work either. Won't read or spin.I am frustrated...http://club.cdfreaks.com/images/smilies/6/eek.gif.Candy user_offline.gif this can be due to invalid media........all types will not burn in this unit........good success....meder's tv service

The door on my lite on dvd recorder will not open

My roommate obtained one of these free due to the same problem
He is technical-minded, so he opened the top and found that the pulley had come off the track. It was that simple.

It works great now.

Hope this helps.

Invalid disc reading

I find that I get the Invalid disk message most likely when I use a DVD-R disk. So now I use only DVD+R for this machine. I have also read somewhere that the problem could be solved by using a Laser Lens Cleaner Cleaning disk.

My liteon vcr/dvd recorder lvc-9016G:

You have 2 choices here, you can either submit the unit to an authorised service centre (or similar), obtain a quote on the likely cause(s) of the problem (which to me sounds like the digital control circuit has failed partially to the DVD deck and/or corrupt firmware which is not possible to upgrade), the potential costs involved, and so on, you can then make a decision based on the unit's age and overall condition as to whether it's economical to repair or not. The point is, the unit is repairable, but it could prove expensive.

The other option you have, is to keep the unit as a VCR (which is cheaper than repair to the DVD), and later on, buy a new DVD player/recorder (as required). The cost of the repairs to your existing unit vs. buying a new one could be significant. Up to you.

Personally, does the DVD deck play any shop-bought movies? If not, don't bother getting it repaired. Buy a new unit (but keep your existing unit as a VCR while it works).

DVD drawer will not open

I had this problem, and found that the cause was that the mechanism that lowers the disk spindle to allow the drawer to open was not strong enough to overcome the magnet that clamps the spindle into position when it it is closed. The following procedure fixed the problem:

Unplug the unit, and remove its outer cover (eight screws, four on the sides and four on the back)

Remove the thin metal cover over the DVD drive (four screws)

There is a round metal cover on the top of the drive. It is glued in place. Carefully pry it loose. Be careful not to bend it.

The spindle clamp assembly is beneath this cover. It consists of a plastic housing and a metal insert that holds a black fabric gasket and a small, donut-shaped magnet. Remove the entire assembly.

The metal insert is held inside the plastic housing by three bayonet-style prongs. Rotate the insert to free it, then remove it.

Remove the black fabric gasket and the magnet from the metal insert.

Here's where it gets a little strange. The problem is that the magnet is too powerful. Estimate its power by placing it on any iron or steel surface and note how much force is required to dislodge it.

In order to reduce its power, hold it over a range burner or torch for a minute or so. (Honestly, this amount of time is a guess. I "overcooked" my magnet to the point that it lost virtually all its power. The repair, however, was still successful.)

Check the magnet's power again by placing it on the same iron or steel object. It should be significantly weaker.

Reassemble the spindle clamp. Drop it back into place in the plastic top cover of the drive. Replace the thin, round metal cover over it. (In my case, the old glue was still good enough to hold it in
place. The spindle clamp will not pop out of the top of the drive- it is held down by gravity and by magnetic attraction to the spindle.)

Plug the unit in and test the drawer opening again. If it still strains but does not open, disassemble the spindle clamp assembly again and "cook" the magnet some more, then reassemble it.

After verifying that the drawer opens normally, replace the metal cover over the drive and the outer cover of the unit.
