No it is Piezo Electric. No battery in the manual either. The battery operated ones have a button that you have to press to ignite and the battery a single AA hides under the button. Piezo make a big clunk when you turn the knob, but with a battery, it goes click, click, click.
replace the light bulbs or most people put cfl's in and the base of those bulbs are too big and the bulb actually doesnt contact the bottom of socket. try some old school bulbs. or just clean terminal bottom of socket. UNPLUG MACHINE FIRST OR YOU WILL TASTE PENNIES!!
Exactly what kind of switch are you using? If it has more than 2 connections, you may have it wired to 2 connectors that are always connected together. If it has more than 2 connections, try disconnecting all the wires and going over it with a continuity tester or ohm meter and check the function of each connection. If your switch has only has 2 connectors, they may be welded together internally in which case it is defective. Again, use an ohm meter or continuity tester and check it out.
Good luck,
