That depends on what you have equipment wise. An combination VHS/DVD player will do it automatically. If you have two different devices, it will depend on the outputs of the VHS player and the inputs of the DVD read/write device. You can do this by playing around but you need to copy not only the video but the sound as well.
Converting VHS to DVD with a DVD recorder is quite easy. You need a DVD recorder, a VHS player and your VHS cassette, an RCA or S-Video cable. For more and you can click into the tutorial.
You need to get a machine that has both and will record dvd. They used to make them years ago, but you could probably find one on ebay or craigs list.

Try using DVD/RW disks with pausing the recording when you change VHS tapes.
SOURCE: Sylvania SRDV495 DVD-VHS
I have the same unit, a SRDv495 and have also been having
a bad time getting dvd's that will work in my machine. I also
bought mine from Sears. I have found one that works every
time and that is a MAXWELL DVD-RW. The trick I think is
the speed of the DVD, so you need to use the ones that have
Up to Max 2X, 4.7 GBgo, 2 Hrs. I find these work every time.
Hope this helps.
