Keep the router to supply IP address using dhcp mode. Increase the lease time to 24 hours and don't forget to bind your device mac address with the dhcp IP in the router. This way it will always get the same ip from the router.

Every router I have ever seen allows you to reset the configuration to factory default - but not allow you to retrieve a forgotten password and maintain your settings at the same time. This is often referred to a "factory" or "hard" reset.

When you initiate a factory / hard reset, typically by pressing & holding a button on the router - or behind an opening in the router case - all the changes you've made to it will be returned to the factory default. Wifi becomes "open" with no password (on most devices), the login username / password also go back to default settings (common ones are: admin / admin, admin / password, <blank> / admin, <blank / password, etc.). Consult your router's set up guide or online documentation to learn what the factory / hard reset procedure and the default settings.

Once you gain access to the setup pages of the router, configure it as best as you can remember, and lock it down with good security settings. At minimum - this should include changing the router's username / password, the WiFi's SSID and do not broadcast it, add WPA or WPA2 encryption and secure it with a security or network key (use a mix of numbers, letters, symbols etc.).

I suggest recording all these settings on paper and then tape it to the bottom of the router. There it will remain out of sight - but ready when you need it.

Good luck!

Windows Vista won't let me config Arris tg862g router options

recently purchased
so was used, and the other owner set it to custom IP address range. like I always do.
so you used WPS to gain, WIFI?> using the magic button?
if yes, then you didn't set the router up first. the correct way
for getting all those security issues set right. inside.

I windows, vista,
so vista connects via the 6701 so it does work ! using wps or others credentials .
click run box., search.:
so type this in cmd.exe prompt box.
ipconfig /all ( space before /) and hit enter
then you see the gateway address.
use that in your browser.

first connect the router with a ethernet cable
get that working first, not wifi
then do ipconfig /all
if you see some wild address there, then reset the router
doing the 10 second long reset on the router (button)
this puts it back to factory settings and the factory IP base address.
then use your router that way to set It up
the manual for your router covers all this.
Reset the router is used,
use correct IP address in browser, via eithernet cable
IE11 will have to be forced, tell it its ok when warning you IE.
then you get the home page in the router
then use the factory PW and Admin name in your manual
bingo you are in.
use that and set your own SSID ,WPA2, and password.
save and now wifi works and all.
I use firefox v66 no issues going to raw IP address on my sub lan.

Forgotten password for wifi network

Which operating system ??
Your wireless Internet password is the encrypted security pass phrase that was set up when you installed your wireless router.

Your router allows you to access the Internet.
If you have access to more than one wireless network, you may need to remember multiple passwords.

If you happen to forget one password, you have two options: reset your password or locate the current password.

Windows 7 allows you to view the security characters of all your wireless network passwords.
Click the "Wi-Fi" network icon located on the Window's taskbar.

Right-click the name of your network's "SSID" name and select "Properties" from the drop-down menu.

Click the "Security Tab." The network security key is now visible but unreadable.

Click the "Show Characters" check box and this will reveal your wireless password.

Reset My WiFi Password

Wireless networking is a common feature in homes and offices.
Wireless routers provide access to a single Internet source, and wireless passwords ensure that only select users can access the network.

If a password is forgotten or lost, the password can be recovered or reset by accessing the router's Web-based settings menu.

Most wireless routers also have a reset button, which is capable of returning the router to its default settings which includes resetting the password.

Connect to your Wi-Fi or attach your computer directly to the router with an Ethernet cable.
Open your Web browser.

Enter the default address of your router.
The default address is listed in your user manual or on the product website.

Linksys and 3Com routers typically use "192.168.1.1" while Netgear routers use "192.168.0.1."
Enter your username and password.

Many routers use "admin" for the username and password by default.
Locate the wireless security settings. Disable the wireless security.

Reset to Factory Defaults

Locate the reset button on your router.
Typically the reset button is a small indented hole on the back of the device.

Insert a long thin object such as a paperclip and hold down the reset button for 30 seconds to revert the router to its factory default settings.

Locate the wireless security settings and add security as necessary.

Password for the wifi connection needed

Charlotte, The answer to this question depends on the question you are asking. If you are trying to connect to a wifi connection that has a password on it then you will need to know that wifi password. If this is yours and you forgot the password there are a couple of things that you can do to get connected again. One is you can log into the router to check what the wireless password is. If you don't have any other computers connected via wireless you will need to connect via an ethernet cable. Then type in the IP address of the router in your browser. Generally this address is 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.0. To check open the command prompt, Start>Run then type cmd, and type ipconfig then hit enter. You will see an address for gateway and that will be the address of the router. Type that ip address into your browser to connect. Once you connect to the routers webpage you will need to enter a username and password. The default user name and password is in the manual. Once logged in you will be able to find what you have set for a WEP, WPA, or WPA2 password If you can't login to see what you set as the password then use the steps below that are for ressetting the router. Those steps will clear all settings on the router and bring it back to factory settings.
The other thing your question might be for is you forgot your password for connecting to the router. If this is the case you will need to do a hard reset on the router. This will restore it to the factory settings which will clear all of your current settings. It will be just like the first time you powered it up. To do this there generally a small button that you will have to use a pencil/pen to push it. Different routers require different steps but if you follow the steps I listed it will work for almost all of them. With the router powered on still press that button with the pen or whatever you are using. Hold that button in for 25 seconds then pull the power. Keeping the reset button pressed wait another 25 seconds with the power pulled. Still keeping that button pressed power on the router and leave that button pressed for another 25 seconds. This will set it to the factory defaults and you can use the manual to find the password for the router

Cannot get wifi to work- did this router need a password?

If you have not accessed the main router page and made any changes the wireless may not even have a password set yet.

You need to access the router setup page from your computer connected to it via a cable.

If using windows click start (Bottom left)
run
in the Run box type cmd
in the black box that pops up type ipconfig /all
in the white writing that has just appeared you will find your ethernet local area network or LAN settings
Look down those particular settings and find DHCP Server.
You should have some numbers beside it that look something like 192.168.1.1 this is the ip address of your router. Write it down including the full stops, periods or dots whichever you call them.

Now open a browser window eg Internet Explorer or Firefox
In the top address bar type in that number exactly as you saw it and wrote it.
Hit enter and it should either
1. take you to your router setup page or
2. Have a box pop up asking for username and password.
If its the latter try using Administrator as the login ID and leave the password blank. If that fails try using password as the password.
Maybe the password is underneath the router maybe even the wireless key is written underneath the router?
If thats the case I have just wasted everybodies time. :) ;)
If not and you now can get to the setup page.
Run through your options on the left to set up your wireless and configure your passwords.
If a password is already set for your wireless you should be able to see it in the wireless settings section selectable from the menu on the left.

If you still have no luck accessing the setup page owing to incorrect login or password I'm afraid you are going to have to try to find a manual as I have told you default passwords and if they don't work it must have all ready been pre-configured.
A full reset is possible and MAY return the router to factory settings.
Usually the reset button is small hole on the back of the router near the cable connections. Using a pin or suitable thin object push the reset button and hold it for 10 seconds then release.
After all your lights do their dancing you should try and access the setup page again.

I do hope this helps you some.
As not all routers are the same I can only give you some generic instruction and hope you have enough to go on to get you through.
For this I apologise.
But I hope you get up and running. :)
