There should be an adjusting nut you loosen somewhere along the belt path. You normally loosen it the pull the belt tight the tighten the nut back down much like a fan belt in a car.
Those units are self adjusting. No way to adjust it. It sounds like you have a bad idler pulley or a bad spindle bearings, which would cause the pulleys to be out of alignment.
You need to adjust the gas pedal. Info should be in the owners manual. I have it in my Troy Bilt Bronco manual. It say to adjust it in my book after replacing the trans drive belt. Maybe that will help.
