Singer has the manual for the Futura XL400 on the product site: http://www.singerco.com/products/2168/xl-400-futura . Additional documentation and driver upgrade software is here: http://futura-support.com/products/xl-400 . Unfortunately, Singer doesn't provide replacement CDs if you lost the original one. According to the directions for the driver upgrade, you need the CD to install the upgrade.

The software packages are available for sale at Amazon and other vendors. Some CDs may be available on E-bay.

from you operators manual it will explain how to connect the machine to the computer for the down load or to download to a usb stick for installation to the machine
if you don't have the manual then go google and type in -operators manual ( for the machine)

You did not indicate which operating system is used on your laptop. If you have Win Vista, 7, or 8, there is a patch that you can download from singerco.com, find your XL400, go to software and download the patch (should go to your download folder) . Next go to the Control Panel and uninstall the software. Re start your computer. Turn OFF your anti virus software and install the Base Singer software. Next, go to the download folder and double click on the Futura patch. Plug in your usb to the singer, then laptop, and turn on the sewing machine. At this point you can Launch the Futura software.
1. Turn on Computer
2. Plug in usb from XL 400
3. Turn on XL
4. Launch Software

There is no update or patch with the driver separately from the corresponding communication part intergrated into main software.
If installation cannot be completed successfully it must be something that interfere into this process. There is a troubleshooting utility in Futura folder that creates a report which is supposed to be sent to support service.

I did this about 20 times and my still is not working. I even deleted the Clem drive, uninstalled and reinstalled.

When it dose work the embroidery is very nice, but on the whole --it is junk. But I keep trying.

I too am running vista and had problems installing software ... I called singer support and they walk me through removal of futura ( you have to be sure u remove the already installed clem driver) and ALL futura... then re-install.... my machine is running fine on vista now!!!!
