When your coffee is being grinned, it is being sent in a dosing compartment. Once there's enough coffee in it, it pushes on the dosing switch to tell the grinder motor to stop. Then, the "door" of the compartment opens to let the coffee fall into the brewing unit.
From this, there's two possible problem that might be worth checking.

First, check if the switch is working properly, is clogged or dirty.

Second, check if the door of the dosing compartment is closed. (should be closing with a spring)

If the door is kept open during grinding, the coffee won't add up in the dosing compartment and therefore, your machine won't know when there's enough coffee.

Hope this helps

Your question is not right.
Grinder stops on its own in 16 to 18 seconds (times out).
It may not be grinding beans an spinning free because the beans are not feeding.
You may have used oily beans or set the grind fineness at very fine powder like. This powder like fineness also clogs the grinder..
You need to clean the grinding chamber and the ground coffee outlet.

The grinder grinds too long, then stops and then the bean refill light goes on, ---there are plenty of beans but no coffee being made. I think the grinder is not working somehow. Its a 5 year old Saeco...

The lever under the bean hopper is set to low. Push it all the way to the back.
There is a leverbehind the door in the middle top. Pull it to the minus and try again.
If that doesn't work you are going to have to take the grinder apart and clean it.

SAECO fully auto Traditional Very little crema

The crema is created by reducing the grinding to more fine so the coffee will run slower around 20 sec. Inside the coffee bean container their is un adjust control and with special tool you can turn it to grind the coffee to more fine.

The machine won't start up

in the self test does it flush the unit ? If not you have to prime the unit by allowing it to pump hot water through the frothing valve. Open the valve and the pump should pulse water out. After this the machine should indicate it is in the operating mode for coffee
