We had a problem with ours, it kept telling us the filter needed cleaning, though it had just been done and was actually fine. It would sound a high pitched alarm and "freak out" on us.
We found using a shop vac and cleaning it out all (while unplugged, of course) inside where there are intakes and general insides was greatly helpful. It was making a crackling noise as well, quite often.
We have asthma and allergies in the household and rely on this to help our family, it's a wonderful thing to own, we love it.
But, this one problem had us stumped. Do try to use a powerful vacuum and really get inside. We have cats and apparently cat hair as well as household dust was clogging it. You obviously need to do more than clean the filters, themselves, from time to time.
If she is suffering there are animal hospitals open 24/7/365 or if it is not an emergency, your vet will get you in sooner than later if it you explain she is hurting and it is necessary to get in to have your pet assesed.
The only two parts requiring any service are the activated carbon pre-filter and the HEPA filter. No tools are needed. To change either filter, disassemble the unit as shown. 1. Loosen the carrying handle by turning it counterclockwise and lift filter cage cover from unit. 2. Lift HEPA filter and activated carbon pre-filter from the base. 3. Remove the fasteners from the activated carbon pre-filter and remove it from the HEPA filter cartridge. 4. Replace filter(s) as needed, and discard used filters. 5. Wrap the activated carbon pre-filter around the HEPA filter cartridge and secure it with the fasteners provided
Have a Indoor air quality inspection preformed in your house. Then spend the money to have a air purifier installed for the whole house. In this day you often get what you pay for. It may be possible that your Doctor can provide you with a prescripition for the Air purifer to be installed.
By all means run the unit while you wait for the new RCI cell. The purifier will be less effective in killing germs while the RCI cell is out. It will still work to reduce the allergens in the air. Hope this helps you.
I had the same problem: Had cleaned it inside, taking off both grids, washing wire, etc. Still the red light blinking would come back on after a few minutes. So here's what I did next:
Take off the grids on both sides. Make sure the grids are clean with water and paper towels (lots of black) On the unit itself, wipe out the metal sides and all the plastic. Then, here's the KEY,
get out your computer cleaning canned AIR and blow it into the open unit and blow the air on both of the grids too. I first used a hairdryer to blow it out, but the canned air is much stronger and I got all kinds of little black particles out with it.
Put it up and down 3 times, plugged it back in and WALAA! The unit is back to working perfectly and no red light has come on again!
I'm sure this will work for everyone if you just get the canned air and blow out the unit and the grids too even though you've cleaned them!
The Consumer Products Safety Commission is going to be making a decision on all ionizers. It's possible by the end of the year that no one will be selling them anymore.
This industry should have been regualated years ago even after the EPAs own reports on their own website.
