Catherine, Try compressed air to blow dust and debris from key board, try a system restore to an earlier date, you could also try re installing key board/driver, you may also have faulty key board and need to replace..

if someome used your latop and spilled someting on the key board it would have gone down under the keys and in to the mother board. take the key board off and see if there is anything wet there or has been wet. if that is what it is you are bumming.

I would think you would have to replace the key board, if u have a fair idea of what your doing u can do this yourself. youll need the computer model and search for one on the net, then once you have it youll have to take the screws out of the computer(don't unscrew the lcd screen bolts)their also maybe some screws underneath the keys as well, ujust have to lift them from the bottom upwards and they should pop off and on.Hope this helps you.

Hey Chris, take off the back cover of the set and disconnect the key controller board. The key controller is the board that has your side buttons attached to it. If you replaced the main board and power supply with good parts, the only logical thing to try next is the key controller

Please open this LINK, scroll down to page no. 2-5 i.e. the section with "To use the Function Hot Keys Fn". There you'll find the details about the functional function keys of your compaq. It seems your function key i.e. Fn key is activated, to deactivate, press and hold down the Fn key while you tap the Numlock key once.

the key board need to be fixed

we have to make sure if this is an issue with the key board or if it is with the software, it is very simple, all you need to do is, just plug an external key board (USB type) and try using it, if you do not have any issue with the external key board the you just need to replace the key board of your laptop.
If you are having the same issue or something similar to the current issue, it is evident that you have some kind of virus in the computer. have your system scanned with an antivirus software.

You probably need to just clean the circuit board and the conductive rubber contacts. There are two per key to facilitate reading the key velocity.

Use 99% isoprophyl alcohol and Q-Tips to clean both the board and the rubber contacts.

A rod is inserted lengthwise to hold the hammer weights while removing the boards. Use dowels from each end inserted about halfway back between the keys and the weight rods. Use a 1/4 inch dowel rod.

You have to take out a few screws to remove the boards from the key assembly. Be careful of the cables.

THERE MIGHT BE A PEICE OF PAPER HOLDING DOWN A SENSOR, YOU WILL NEED TO CHECK OR THE OTHER POSSABILLITY IS THAT THE PHONE BOARD IS BAD AOR YOU MAY HAVE A STUCK KEY, THE KEY BOARD IS NOT A BOARD IT IS A PLASTIC  WITH PRESURE SENATIVE KEYS UNDER THE KEY BUTTONS GOOD LUCK
