Right click on your DVD drive, go to Properties. In there there should be a tab that says Enable Write CD, make sure the box is checked so that you can write using the drive, click OK or Apply. Then restart your computer and put in a DVD, it should read properly now.

Did you try a disk cleaner ? for the system and theres one for disks to.

A DVD/CD player has different laser beams. So if one is damage, the other can still function. In your case, the DVD laser beam/lens is probably damaged. It is hard to repair the problem and DVD reader/writers are cheap these days that it is better to get a new than to repair your old one.

These drives are very picky about the CD's and DVD's they accept because the chemicals on the different manufacturers DVD and CD's are all different. What you will have to do is experiment with different brands... for example go buy very few Verbatim DVD's if the brand works for you stick with it. Unfortunately they don't tell the customers about this... but every burner I have... there are some brand CD and DVD that won't be accepted by the drive. For a shortcut by the CD or DVD's that the manual recommends that is most certainly to work and lets you cut to the chase more expendiantly without wasting money. Good Luck

Depends how its marked if its DVD-RW it use minus, if its DVD+RW its uses plus. If its
DVD-RAM its for DVD+/-RW (and CD-R, CD-RW, DVD+/-R).

The small disk fits into the exact center of your cd drive (not hard drive which is internal). There is a recess for it. If there is not one you have an old CD drive. Given you have Vista and a Dell I am assuming it is a relatively new machine...you could also have a combo cd/dvd drive or a just a dvd drive which accepts both dvd's and cd's (and should also accept the small cd's).

If you have posted the correct model of writer, then it only supports the writing of DVD+R and DVD+RW discs, but CD-R and CD-RW disc writing are supported, and it should play all forms of DVD, so it won't burn DVD-R and RW discs, but if it wont play all types then try a cd/dvd cleaner, but to be honest when writers start playing up the lens is normally faulting and a replacement drive will be required.
