One lever is to make it go - wheels will turn & pull the mower..
The other lever is to keep it running - it this lever is released it will shut off..
This is the lever you need to keep pushed for it to start..

When starting - there should be a rubber push button on the engine near the carb.. Push it 4 times before starting.. This pumps gas into the carb for quick starts.. Good luck ;o)

Toro self paced lawn mower works just fine going forward. Cannot pull mower backwards, wheels are stuck.

Your cable might need renewing, it could be rusted or frayed where it connects to the gear lever,or the lever itself could be stuck. Try spraying it with W D 40. Check the gears inside the wheels, they might be stuck and need freeing and oiling. Stephen.

Go in reverse

The steering levers control all movement on a zero-turn mower. Just slowly pull both handles back evenly and you'll go backwards in a straight line. The farther you pull back the levers the faster it goes backwards.

Cannot pull the cord more than 6 inches to start Toro lawn mower.

Hi Patti, If you can not pull the cord more that what you said, try removing the spark plug and see if that makes a difference, if not, leave the spark plug out to prevent accidental starting, raise up the front of the mower and see if you can turn the blade if not...it only gets worse from there. If you can't turn the blade from under the mower, the engine is more that likely seized up, sorry
