Motherboard not functioning

Replacing the Power Supply in HP Pavilion p6000 p6 1000 and p6 2000... This is a common power supply that can be purchased just about any computer retailer - BestBuy, MicroCenter, Amazon.
Very cheaply priced, very functional. Even the generic brands.

Ahem, you just posted 20 + 4-pin.

That means it can be a 20-pin ATX main power cable, OR a 24-pin ATX main power cable.

Most power supply's now have a 20 + 4-pin power cable.

Use the 20-pin connector, or add the additional 4-pin connector, to make a 24-pin ATX main power cable.

It sounds like the ATX power supply is not getting turned on by the motherboard.
In order for this to happen, pin 14 (PS_ON*) of the 20-pin ATX power plug from the power supply must be pulled to ground. You can test this by plugging the power supply in to AC power without it plugged in to the motherboard.

Using a paper clip, short pin 14 (PS_ON*) to pin 15 (ground) and the power supply should turn ON.

If you can turn on the power supply by shorting pin 14 to ground, but it doesn't happen when plugged into the motherboard, there is most likely a jumper setting on the motherboard which has not been configured correctly.

Your motherboard uses a standard ATX power supply 20 pin power connector. Most ATX power

Emachines don't last long. Even though the power supply turns on it still could be bad.
It is probably the motherboard. Best to buy a new computer. Pull the hard drive from the old one and set it up as slave on the new PC so you can transfer all your old files.

Chances are that 250w power supply is not going to power a motherboard with a 24 pin connector, but you can try.
You will need to purchase a 20 to 24 pin adapter cable.

As for the Power Supply 99% sure it is an ATX which as long as you get the same Watt as the existing you will be okay. Make sure you look at your existing connectors to see if you have a 24 pin or 20pin motherboard and 4 pin or 8 pin additional power plug (black and yellow wires) and the new power supply has matching connectors....older ATX supplies have only 20 pins, but there are converters from 20 to 24 pin available.

Watch for the new power supplies and your drive connectors as some of the new power supplies have limited ATA plugs...if you have a lot of ATA devices you might need SATA power convertor plugs or ATA splitters to get all you ATA devices up.

You will have to figure out if your current case is ATX or Micro-ATX. Afterward find a power-supply online that will fit an ATX or Micro-ATX case. Another factor to consider is your motherboard's power connector. Some motherboards can only take a 20 pin while others take a 24 pin.

Perhaps a good power supply choice would be a PSU that has a 20+4 pin motherboard connector.

After select, "Power Supplies" on the left and you will be able to find PSUs for desktop computers. I recommend the PC Power & Cooling brand, they are extremely reliable. Some of their PSUs also offer the 20+4 pin connectors.

The extra 4 pins on the power supply's atx connector is for new motherboards that require 24pin power supplies. If your motherboard has a 20pin port, then only connect the 20pin portion of your power supply connector.

If your power supply has a 24pin fixed connector that can't be split into a 20+4pin configuration, and your motherboard doesn't have space to let the extra 4pins on the side, then you might want to consider returning the power supply and change it for one that can be used as a 20 or 24pin. Otherwise you will need to cut the extra 4pins apart.
