I have been manually defrosting this fridge for a number of months now and have grown very tired of it. There are no Samsung repair people in my area so I am on my own. Freezer totally frosts up with fairly solid ice in the drip pay area. Refrigerator has water/ice build up under the lowest drawers. Just defrosted both earlier today and am waiting for it to get back down to temps. This time the refrigerator had a solid block of ice in drip tray under the coil. Where do I start the troubleshooting? Manual seems to suggest defrost sensor in the freezer but I find it difficult to understand the diagnostics chart.

TAKE AND DISCONNECT THE POWER TO TH UNIT AND ON THE VERY BACK THERE IS A CONTROL BOARD THE IS UNDERNEITH A WHITE PLASTIC COVER THAT YOU WILL HAVE TO REMOVE THEN DISCONNECT AND RECONNECT THE WIRES TO THE CONTROL BOARD AND SEE IF THAT DOESTHE TRICK.

That model has a flaw that the defrost heater is woven into the evaporator. I think you may have a 5 year sealed system warranty and if the defrost element is defective the complete sealed system evaporator will need replaced. So I believe that a complait filed to the company regarding this flaw will get their attention and may solve the cost of repair.

You have a bad defrost timer or a bad defrost heater.

first of all everyone needs to get off the idea the heater is not replaceable without breaking into the sealed system.. it is infact replaceable and seperate from the evap coil. you will have to order the whole assembly but the you seperate the front coil/heater from the holders and place it on your unit.. i think tiger direct sells the evap assembly and its around 70 dollars..

The heater needed for this repair comes with an evaporator making this a major repair. What city are you in? I will try and locate someone for you.
If not I can help walk through the repair if you are really handy.

I find it very annoying when somebody answers a question like this by saying "why not contact the manufacturer?' or "call in a repairman". You are saying that you can temporarily solve this by doing a forced defrost - that means the defrost itself is working but the automatic operation has a problem. The first thing to check is the temperature sensor that's attached to the cooling coil - behind the panel at the back of the fridge: you need a resistance meter and, with the sensor removed, at room Temp. (77 F.) the sensor resistance should be 5K ohms, at freezing(32 F.) 1.3K ohms resistance, and at 0 dgrs.F. 3K ohms resistance. Also, if you check a few Youtubes, you'll see various fixes for the heated tag that keeps the drain-hole free from ice - this is made of aluminum but, as it's attached the the iron heater rod, it corrodes away and the drain can then plug. People either replace it with a Samsung part or put a twist of heavy copper wire in its place.
