Sounds like the color wheel or lamp I would check the lamp first to insure thats its not broken as they can make a pop when they fail sometime (Breaking) then I would check the color wheel you will be able to tell if the color wheel arear has the noise coming from it. If you need more assistance let me know.
Well if it is DLP TV then crack/ pop sound was broken lamp in TV and if its another kind of TV as you did not mention its model and brand then have to check accordingly.
If you have a Sony DLP, then the loud pop you heard is your lamp. The lamps last approx. 4K-6K viewing hours. Read your manual for replacement part number to reorder and very simple to replace yourself.
The 23" CRT set may have a high voltage breakdown in the flyback transformer or focus divider. Take the back off and operate the set in a dark room. Look for anything that has a blue glow around it or sparks flying when the pop occurs. I won't guarantee this will find your problem, but it is definitive if you see these!
I once had a set with these symptoms. I stopped the blue glow and arcing by covering the focus divider with epoxy. It worked for a couple of months before the divider literally broke apart.
I guess loud sizzling was from High Voltage Splitter in your TV. HV seems cracked and leaking high voltage.
You can observe and confirm it by removing back cover and power up TV from distance and check at rear of TV. Please take care and there should be little dark to observe arc from HV splitter.
If this is the case, HV splitter available in Part Store.
Turn down the volume and see if you still hear it,a loud pop or snap could be high voltage call your servicer in your area ASAP
while its under warranty and have him check the high voltage circuits for a intermittenting pop or snap. And have the model # ready!! Good Luck!
