Must be because of an old iOS on the iPad. some games require iOS 6 or 7 or even 8.
- if you have an old first generation iPad (without camera) you can only update to iOS 5!
- an update depends on the iPad model you have:
For the iPad first generation (A1219) to update is only possible with connecting the device to iTunes on a computer.
- but this model supports only iOS 5
- NO iOS 6/7/8 !

for all other models:
There are two ways to upgrade the iOS version of your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch - via connecting the device to iTunes on a computer
- or directly from within the device, but only since iOS 5, it is possible to upgrade the iOS version without the need to connect the iOS device to a computer (over-the-air update)
just go to: settings - general - software update

There could be many things causing this but here are a few solutions:

#1- Restart your iPad if you haven't since the game updated.
#2- If that doesn't work uninstall the game and reinstall it.

If one of those two doesn't work, then I would report it to the developer to see if it's a bug. The other possibility is after the update changed the game it may be conflicting with another app on your iPad. If that's the case, it can be difficult to figure out which one without deleting all your apps(outside of apple ones) and add one back on and test if the game works or not aftward. Repeat until you figure out which one is the issue.

Candy crush issue is mainly because of updated version of IOS on ipads ... update your ios on ipad and re-download the game. it will work properly..

If you have your old iPad, back it up with iTunes on your computer.
With your new iPad connected to your computer, click the "Restore Backup" in the summary screen of your iPad (on iTunes).
You should have your old game data now installed on your new iPad.
Update, or buy, a new version of the game on your new iPad

Can I update my old iPad to a newer version?

Unfortunatly No. You can update the apps, or the OS X (operating system) but not the IPad version. Always when an update is required by the IPad or by an application, make sure to do it.

There seems no problem with your iPad or MacBook. The problem is with the app itself. The developer would'nt have updated the app to support iOS 5.1, hence it's crashing on start up. You mentioned that there's a $2.99 version of the app. You should buy it only if it says that it supports iOS 5.1 and above.

I had the same issue after an update as well. I downloaded the latest IPAD software and once the IPAD software was updated the surfs game loaded properly. Good Luck
