Seiko Self winding 200M Divers Watch Stopped Working

An automatic watch receives it power from the mainspring, which is wound by hand (most watches) and from movement of the arm which causes the Oscillating Weight to spin around and wind the mainspring. The problem is that it takes many, many rotations of the weight to put enough winds on the mainspring to keep it going. If you have not worn the watch for 24 hours you need to put initial winds on the mainspring, either by turning the crown or by swinging the watch around 30-40 times. If the watch is in good mechanical condition, once you put the initial winds on it, you can put it on your wrist and it should run overnight if taken off. Most older Seiko watches cannot be wound by hand.

The issue reported is not about how to set the watch, it is about the fact that it stops if it us not worn continually. This could be an indicator of the movement needing to be serviced. Automatic watches such as yours need to be serviced regularly, every 3-5 years or as needed by such indications. My recommendation is to see a Certified Master Horologist to test the watch on the timing machine.

When serviced, there should be approximately a 45 hour power reserve when fully wound.

Take it in to a watch repairer. Sounds like the self-winding spring is worn if not so then the watch repaier will find the problem. There is nothing you can do so do not attempt to fix it.

This model is not on their web site but other SN models are and they are "self winding" types.

It could be that it needs to be wound by gently shaking it from side to side (face up). Some makers suggest several hundred times to wind the watch fully.

As most makers recommend that their watches are serviced every 2 or 3 years; if winding it up by shaking does not get it going, a trip to their service center might do the trick.

If the watch is a self winding type, then it generally says "automatic" on the face. These will run for about 2-3 days if they are not worn, as the self winding action only works when the user is moving).

Battery driven watches should run for at least a year before needing a replacement, so if it has stopped already, it could be self winding or manually wound type. Some self winding watches can be manually wound so you could try this to see if it starts.

These watches are self winding (mechanical spring), so need to be worn (or gently oscillated) to wind them up.

The catalogue for this watch says it should run for 72 hours when fully wound.

Depending on when the watch was made, it could be that it needs a clean.

Try wearing it for a few days to see if it keeps going.

Hi mtrahan99. My advice is to take it back and get it replaced, particularly if you have only had it a few days. If they won't exchange it or refund you, get a repair under the guarantee. Automatic watches (and Seiko actually make some very good ones) don't need to be worn all the time to wind them, and the fact that it ran so fast and has now stopped would indicate something major like problems with the mainspring. There can be hundereds of causes why your watch isn't working properly, so, I'll not name them.
One is clear- without help of skilled watchmaker your watch will NEVER work properly.
NOTE: It may sound very strange, but mechanical watches do NOT like to be left without job.
Next time you decide to leave mechanical watch aside for long time- do not forget to wind it up once in a 2-3 days even if you are not wearing it.
This will help to prolong watch movements life and keep timekeeping steady and accurate.

Since it's eco-drive you can just wear it for a few hours and it should self-wind. The problem is that when it sits still for more than a few days it winds down. It gets its power from the natural movement of your wrist as you walk around.

Once it starts ticking again you'll just have to set the time correctly.
