Excellent answer Robco, One slight variation of an explanation about "waste"...
When in this mode, water never actually enters the filter tank, it goes in the valve from the pump, and out of the valve through the waste port.
Very similar to the "recirculate" mode, it comes from the pool with the help of the pump into the filter valve, and right back out the filter valve, without ever going into the tank, and back to the pool via the return port.
Just about like any other sand filter. when the dial is on 'filter', the water enters from the pump, flows onto the sand, filters through the sand to the standpipe fingers and returns to the pool. when the dial is on 'drain/waste', the water enters the filter and then exits directly to the waste pipe. if the dial is on 'recirculate/whirlpool', the water enters the filter from the pump, bypasses the sand and returns to the pool. when you put the dial on 'backwash', the water enters the filter from the pump, goes down the standpipe, exits through the fingers and pushes up through the sand removing the accumulated debris from filtering. this dirty water exits through the waste pipe taking the debris with it.
SOURCE: How to change sand in Hayward S-200 Sand filter
hayward S-180 filter takes 150lbs, S-210 takes 200lbs not familur with the S-200. To change sand you have to remove the vari flow valve on top. You can either unplumb the filter and roll it over on its side and try washing the sand out or try scooping it out upright. Whatever you do dont damage the laterals on the bottom of the filter. When refilling with sand you want to make sure all the laterals are undamaged and in the down position. I always fill the filter half full of water to keep the sand from damaging the laterals while re-filling the filter with sand. Make sure you use pool filter sand and not play sand!
SOURCE: replaced sand now filter isnt working
if u used play sand, or any other type of sand thats NOT pool filter sand, that could be the problem. also if there is too much sand or too little sand that could also cause this.
SOURCE: hayward sand filter pressure builds up and return
pressure should be at around 10 if its higher backwash to bring pressure down make sure you are seating hos clamp screw type over ring on return pipe
SOURCE: How do I chabge the sand in my s-200 Hayward sand
take top off open bottom drain use a small wet vac hose to get as much out through top out be careful not to damage filter bars wash the rest out through bottom drain with a garden hose
SOURCE: I have a hayward SP714
Sand filters have a screen at the bottom. This screen keeps the sand from getting out because it has slits or holes that are smaller than the size of the sand grain. The slits are large enough for the water to pass. If the material breaks there are areas that are large enough to allow the sand to pass and this won't stop until you replace the strainer elements.
In order to do this, you must remove the sand, remove and inspect the strainer and replace the sand.
Bring your model to a local pool supplier, confirm what I am saying, make sure they have the necessary parts and go from there.
