The circuit board may have been jolted by a power surge and a diode is stuck in the on position. The pathway is only in one direction and thus it can't be reversed. Replacement may be the ony solution.

That is strange. You may have had the clerk sign on codes changed by someone. Make sure you are using the CLK# button at the top of the keyboard next to DEPT SHIFT button. Make sure the key is turned to REG position. If 1 CLK# doesn't work, try 2 CLK# or 9 CLK# Most machines will print the clerk number on the display once you enter it correctly e.g "-01-"
