I need to remove the keypad on my GE JVM1540 Microwave, but I can't tell what screws, tabs, etc. are involved. Can anyone describe the steps to remove the keypad? I'd like to try cleaning out the connectors and stuff to fix a problem with the keypad (seems to be a short).
Remove the air grill first. Should be a couple of screws. Then you will see one screw holding the keypad in on top. Take it out and it will tilt forward. Make sure you unplug any power source first before you try removing any screws. Once you have the keypad leaning forward there will be some connectors holding the keypad in. Unplug those and lift the keypad up and out.

I have a new ge 1540 and needed to remove the grill to install the charcoal filter.
After removing the two screws on top, you need to slide the grill about 1/2" to the left. Then the grill will wiggle loose and can be removed.

If you mean the control panel, at
our Web site, we have a video
available showing how to remove a typical
over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.
If you mean the door, you have to separate the door panels (as shown in the attached photo)
and then you'll see the previously hidden screws you need to remove.
Or you can watch a YouTube video (not a video I
made) that demonstrates how it's done.

Membrane keypads are not very durable, and do fail after a relatively short time.
The only method is to replace them as a spare part.

Direct spraying of
cleaners on the keypad and steam from the
cooktop can damage the controls.
I always recommend that
you spray non-ammonia
cleaner on a
soft cloth (not a paper towel which can scratch) and gently wipe the
keypad.
And I always recommend
that you use the vent fan whenever you're cooking on the stove
top to keep heat, steam, and
grease out of the controls and door panels.
If it does not dry out
over time, it may need to be manually dried or blown out.

Otherwise, the keypad may be
damaged or worn out, or control unit may be damaged.
