Flat spots on the support rollers from sitting in storage will make a thump. So will heavy wet clothes if they are not spun dry enough from the washer. This may lessen as the unit is used but since it is in warranty a service call to rule out major problems is in order.

Dryer runs and drys but makes a thump soud every revolution "like a tennis ball"

Check the belt that is on the drum. It sounds like it may have a chunk broken off of it and you may need to replace it.

Thump

The drive belt broke and the thumping was caused by a flatten roller on the belt tensioner. Replace the tensioner pulley and the belt to get it running like new again

My dryer -model FER311F makes a thumping noise while in use.

Check the 4 feet & make sure top of of appliance is level. These 4 feet will have threaded adjustments, just tilt the dryer back and should be able to turn with your hand or may require pliers, good luck.

Maytag Dryer MDG9700AWW has split into the metal drum at the seam

I'd say take the 50% off offer. Dryer drums are very thin, and a weld would most likely still make a thump noise every time it passed the drum supports. (two thumps per revolution) I've seen this on other brands which use thin stainless steel drums. (I didn't look up your model to see if the drum was SS or powder coated metal, or galvanized, or whatever) It is not a real common thing, but certainly not unheard of. I'd say it was indeed a poor weld, but the manufacturer's generally won't help much once it makes it past the warranty period. Don't bother rating this, as anything but a FixYa lowers my rating. Thanks.

LG ELECTRIC DRYER

Henry, its going to be 1 of 2 things. Check inside your drum, see if the vent in the rear has burning or discoloration around it. If it does, it sounds as if your vent is restricted causing the unit to overheat, so clean/fix/replace the venting and your support pulleys will need to be repalce ie flat spots from overheat. If there is no scoarching marks and you know its not the vent or heat issue, the drum seam may have parted causing the thump as every revolution is made.
