I need to know how to wire the plug into the back of the dryer

The plug has white, red, black, and green wires. There are three posts on the back of the dryer, one has blue wires, one has white wires, and the other has black wires going into it. Which posts do I hook the wires to?

Current electrical codes require a 4 wire hookup for all dryers. There needs to be a separate ground and neutral. If you do not know how to hookup the 4 wire version, it is worth calling an electrician to install the correct wires. If there is a problem down the line, the improper installation will invalidate your insurance claim. Dan

We have moved and the three prong cord now needs to be four prong

Ok here is how to hook up looking at dryer. Left brass screw is hot put red or black wire on. Center screw silver is neutral put white wire on. Right brass is also hot put the red or black wire on which one you have left. The green you ground to the dryer body or you can put with the white wire.

The reason why you have to hot wires is that it is a 240 volt dryer. Each hot wire caries 120 volts. The hot wires are the red and black. The white is a neutral witch is also a ground

I hope this helps. If you have any questions please ask before you rate.

Good Luck And Thank You for the post

I need to switch my three prong power chord to a four prong

your terminal block on the dryer will have three screws in a row and there will be a green screw on the outer skin next to the terminal block cover - your four-wire cord will have a white wire, red, black and green wires - white wire goes on the center screw of the terminal block, red wire goes on one of the other screws of the terminal block, it doesn't matter which, black wire goes on remaining terminal block screw, green wire goes to the green screw

Installing new plug to dryer in new home. had to convert to 4 out

Are you going from a three wire plug to a four? Not sure what your question is but I know I can help. If it is a four wire, the red and black wires go to the two outside posts. The white wire goes to the middle post and the green/copper wire goes to a gground screw located on the cabinet near the wire terminal block cover.
I hope this helps. Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Thanks

Trying to install 3 way cord with a 4 way replacement cord. I have disconnected all wires and put them back. My question is concerning the white wire. The wires that are already connected to the dryer red,...

In a three wire system you have 2 hot wires (black and red) and a neutral (white). the ground is connected to the neutral at the dryer. In a 4 wire system you have the 2 hot wires, neutral, and a ground. (green). The ground is connected with the neutral at the circuit panel. The hot wires at the dryer should be on the outside scres, the neutral should be in the center and the ground should be under the green screw. *****. .

REPLACING DRYER 4 PRONG PLUG

This is common issue. Due to some building codes the 3-prong configuration is no longer used in homes. The wiring is similiar with one exception. The 4-wire plug uses an additonal (WHITE) NEUTRAL wire.

Here's a brief explanation of how the plugs are configured:

Dryer 3 prong wire configuration:

RED - 120 VAC
GREEN - GROUND
BLACK - 120 VAC

Dryer 4 prong wire configuration:

RED - 120 VAC
GREEN - GROUND
BLACK - 120 VAC
WHITE - NEUTRAL

BOTH plugs provide the SAME source voltages to your appliance:

220 VAC - provided across the RED and BLACK leads are what drives your heating circuitry.
120 VAC - usually tapped of the BLACK wire is used to run the drive motor and timer on MOST dryers.

The wire terminal block in the back of the dryer should have a black, white, and red wire running to it from the dryer wiring harness. With the 4 prong plug, simply attach the BLACK, WHITE and RED wires at the terminal block ensuring that you match the RED and BLACK wires as they are configured and attach the WHITE wire at the remaining terminal lug. Make sure you screw them all down securely. Attach the remaining GREEN wire to chassis (dryer frame) ground. I hope ths helps you.
