How to replace volume control on yamaha htr-5850

SOURCE: yamaha htr-5830

I own this receiver, and 18db is damn loud. Granted - your room might be significantly larger than mine with your speakers spread much further apart, or your speakers might be much less efficient than mine (this means that they want more power than the receiver can dish out - I have whatever speakers came with the "YAMAHA Home Theater in a Box" [the model that came with the HTR-5830]), but I'm pretty sure that the receiver doesn't get any louder (or at least not much). My suggestion is to turn down the volume to about -20db and work up from there after the movie has started. It might be easier to test the volume using music. The negative sign is deceiving - I rarely bring mine up to 0db. Also check the resistance - there's a red switch on the back of the receiver that switches between 6 and 8 ohms - make sure that it matches your speakers' resistance. If turning down the volume doesn't work, then post the problem again. Hope This Helps.

SOURCE: Volume control on unit

Kent, Unfortunately, it sounds as if the encoder is broken. The encoder is a digital input which takes the place of a traditional volume control, and is what holds the volume knob in place and spins. Since it works fine with the remote, that means everything else is ok, but you will have to replace, or have a tech replace, the encoder itself.

SOURCE: Bi-Amping my speakers with HTR-5850

You can at a minimum, bi-wire your speakers by wiring the speakers with the A and B speaker outputs. The A speaker outputs end up running the tweeters and the B will end up powering the woofers.

SOURCE: what's NEC PF68S33 TV's remote control code for YAMAHA HTR-6130

I had similar problem when setting up the YAMAHA remote control for my NEC LCD TV. At the end I found I did not follow the YAMAHA manual properly. Did you hold down the DTV/CBL button, and AT THE SAME TIME press the AV POWER for 3+ seconds? You should be able to "REMOTE SETUP OK" displayed in the front panel of the YAMAHA AV receiver. Hope this helps. BTW, only the TV POWER, TV MUTE and the numeric buttons work in my case.

My htr-5850 just stopped producing sound while using the cable TV. I muted it once and when I took it off mute I have not been able to get the TV's sound to work since. I have no idea what to do. Any...

How is TV sound coming into your Yamaha? If it's from the TV analog audio then maybe the TV's audio output is muted.

If it's from the Cable Box maybe ITs audio is muted. I'd refer to the guide for the Cable Box.

MUTE on the receiver is not source-specific.

Yamaha HTR-5850 Receiver Audio -left front speaker output problem

Does the speaker setup fail the same way?

Yes? Internal amplifier problem.

If No - What source(s) do this?

If just one - reverse its Left and Right inputs to determine which cable or channel on the input device is faulty.

How do I hook my ipod to this yamaha device HTR-5850 -- is there a piece of hardware I can get to interface? thanks

Get a 1/8" miniplug-to-RCA-cable adapter and plug the headphone output directly into any compatible input on the receiver. Press PLAY.

Read the article (it's short). Don't buy into the hype about better cables. IPOD's don't stack up as hi-fi to begin with and cables are cables are cables....

How do I connect pc to htr-5850

You will need an adapter cable available on ebay or at radio shack.

Should have a 1/8" mini male stereo plug on one side and a set (left and right) male RCA plugs on the other end.

Simply plug into the output of your sound card or motherboard (usually blue or green) into any available input (EXCEPT PHONO) on your receiver.

select that input and it should work

hope that helps
