their is sound but no picture screen is black

I have a Dell W1700 and after only three years the screen has blacked out. Everything else is working fine. I contacted three different repair shops in the greater Seattle area and all have said they connot repait the TV because they cannot get parts. I contacted Dell and they will not repair the TV. They offer a 19 inch TV as a replacement for a cost of $399.00. IN my oppinion Dell has sold an unreliable procust and are nopt standing behind it. They no longer carry the W1700 and it makes one wonder why. My guess would be that there has been a lot of they units failing after two or three years so Dell has dicontinued them. The replacement option of a 19 inch TV for $399.00 is outragious, especially when you consider that in the current market you can buy a number of different 19 inch TV's for under $399.00.

Many fewer problems if you plug the tv power cord into a separate outlet without using a power strip. Also use a strong local station with volume turned up a little.

LCD Monitor doesn't display

This is usually caused by capacitors in the monitor power supply that go bad. This site shows the procedure to open the monitor and get to the parts that are the most common failure. (They want you to pay to join to see the full-size pictures in all the steps, but there's enough detail so you can work with the small ones.) When you see the guilty parts they usually have tops that are bulging (should be flat) or even split.

It's not difficult to remove and replace the capacitors, but it does require some experience with soldering on electronic circuit boards. It's possible to do more damage if the removal isn't done correctly.

When you purchase replacement capacitors, use parts with the same value (in microfarads, abbreviated ufd or mf on the part) but the next higher standard voltage. The original parts are 25-volt rated, and you can use 50-volt parts which are only a little larger. The low voltage rating is usually why these go bad in the first place. (The manufacturers save a little by using the lower rated part.)

Good luck with the repair!

Hello Sir, I am using DELL E173FP LCD monitor. My CPU absolutely fine I see initially booting thing on my monitor display then it gets black. I can hear starting sound of Windows XP, that too is fine. When...

You might need to change the screen refresh rate. Go do Control Panel> Display> Setting> Advance, choose 60 Hz. In order to make your Monitor able to display, restart the PC, press F8 on the keyboard frequently upon splashing ( 1 or 2 seconds after PC restarts). Select enable VGA mode by pressing up arrow of the keyboard> press enter. The display should look bigger, then you can start adjusting the screen refresh rate to 60 Hz

I have a blank, black screen, irrespective of the input (cable, dvd, wii). The menus, however, come up fine and the audio is working fine.

Hi,

Your screen is showing a black picture because the closed caption function has been activated. When the closed caption mode is on the screen will display an 80% black picture.

To turn off the closed caption and regain a full screen please follow these steps;

1) Press the Menu button

2) Use the up and down arrows to navigate to Closed Caption

3) Use the right or left arrows to select it.

4) Use the right or left arrows to select OFF

5) Use the up or down arrows to select Finish

6) Use the right or left arrows to save the settings and exit.

You should have your full screen back now minus the annoying black box.

If this solution has helped please do take a moment to rate it.

Thanks for using FixYa

Just started flickering and then black screens - still hear audio, just not picture. Turning it off for awhile lets it come back up..for awhile.

Ur high voltage is dying,it the FBT,the flyback transformer is cold solder or dying. The big black block of plastic with a red wire with a cap that hook to the CRT(tv tube). That the cause.

Tv stays black

Do you have audio and if so can you change channels to hear other programs? If so ...you have a bad vertical IC. Have a tech turn up the screen control to see a white horizontal line. By your question I would say this will correct the problem.
