My newly acquired Lowrance 5X Elite DSI works fine except it seemingly does not display target (fish) returns. Structures, depths, temperature and both frequency screens are there but no fish even though other brand units at the same location at the same time receive the required data. In what form are fish displayed on this unit? I see no arches, fish with bubbles or "blobs". There was no manual with this new equipment which seems to be common with Lowrance. Your assistance would be most appreciated.

Your transducer needs to be adjusted so the return signal can be picked up. Some of these have to be super tuned to receive the signal. Also the transducer may be moving ever so slightly when the boat is traveling at speed. You may have some water turbulence interference all contibute to signal return.
SOURCE: How do you get the fish to show up on the screen
Are you looking for the little fish symbols?
Press MENU, down arrow to SONAR FEATURES and press ENT. Arrow to FISH SYMBOLS and press ENT. Press EXIT twice. Any significant return in the water will now show up as a fish symbol.
Are you looking for the fish arches?
You won't get any arches unless the boat is moving and of course there are fish passing within the transducers signal. The shallower the water, the less area you are covering and less likely to get a fish return.
There is an OK guide to understanding what you see on the sonar screen at the link below. It if pretty technical but parts of it may help you out.

SOURCE: My hummingbird rf15 smartcast fish finder has
The Smartcast system uses the wireless version of a simple transducer and thermometer to locate fish, show structure and water temperature. From your description, it sounds like the transducer portion of the Smartcast device has stopped working.
Transducers are both simple and complex, sturdy and delicate. Here is a Science Minute: A fish finder electrical signal is sent to the transducer. The electrical signal to energize the transducer crystal is generated by an amplifier. The energized crystal reverberates at a particular frequency, to convert the electrical signal into mechanical acoustic or sound energy. The acoustic energy or sound waves causes oscillation of the water molecules through which the sound travels. The sound is pulsed out in a defined beam. These do not travel out in a straight line but in a wave pattern. The acoustic pulse travels through the water at a rate of approximately 4800 ft (1500m) per second in saltwater and 4920 ft/sec in fresh water.
The problem is that the crystal in all transducers (permanent mount, thru-hull mount and castable) is delicate. It is a crystal. Unfortunately the warranty on most of these is six months, and unless yours is newer than that, you may need to buy a replacement castable. The handheld unit should still work. While I think the idea of knowing what is "over there" is a good one for shore fishing, I haven't bought these systems because I could never get over the idea that repetitive casting of a crystal, no matter how well-housed, was a good idea. Good luck.
