SOURCE: Cleaning a self cleaning iron

Fill the Iron with water but keep the water level below the max line. Plug in the iron and set the temp to 6 and stand iron on it's heel and allow to heat for 3 mins. Now unplug the iron and take it to a sink move and Hold the variable steam dial in the CLEAN position. There may be some hissing and spitting while cleaning so be careful. Continue to hold the dial in the clean position until all the water has emptied. If necessary rock side to side and back to front to get all the water out. When finished release the steam dial plug in the iron and heat for about 2 mins to dry out the remaining water and unplug.

SOURCE: the black and decker iron wont heat up

It probably has a high temp overload opened up inside or the thermostat control has gone bad.You can only tell for sure by taking the unit apart and testing the circuit for continuity. The steam feature on the iron is heated by the same element that heats the iron so it wont work.the element itself could also be bad,but I have never seen one go bad.You will have to check each component seperately to find the damaged part.or you can test the whole circuit at the plugs end,and use a jumper across each part until you have continuity through the unit.Make sure the thermostat is turned all the way up.the part that you are bypassing when you get continuity is the bad part.
You can buy a cheap continuity checker at any lowes,or even wallmart for that matter.

SOURCE: How do I clean my Black N Decker Advantage Iron

I work for Black & Decker customer service. Our number is 800-231-9786.

You can obtain a new manual for free by visiting www.useandcaremanuals.com. Below is the section from the manual on care and cleaning of your iron.

Care and Cleaning

This product contains no user serviceable parts. Refer
service to qualified service personnel.
It is not necessary to empty the water reservoir after each
use of the iron, if you iron frequently.
To empty the iron, hold the iron over the sink with the tip
pointing down. Water will stream out of the water fill
opening.

TO CLEAN THE OUTSIDE SURFACES

• Unplug and allow iron to cool completely. Wipe the
soleplate and outer surfaces with a soft cloth
dampened in water and a mild household detergent.
Never use abrasives, heavy duty cleansers, vinegar, or
scouring pads that may scratch or discolor the iron.

• After cleaning, iron with steam over an old cloth to
remove any residue from the steam vents.
ABOUT THE SELF-CLEANING SYSTEM

• Use the self-cleaning system to flush out minerals and
lint. If lint is allowed to accumulate in the vents, it can
scorch and cause brown spotting.
For Models D2000 and D2020: Clean about once a
month.
For Models D2010, D2030 and D2035: A "CLEAN"
indicator will appear in the digital display to notify you
when your iron needs cleaning (A).

• Fill the iron as described in "How to Use" but keep the
water level below the MAX line. Plug in the iron, set
the temperature to 6, and stand the iron on its heel
rest. Allow to heat about 3 minutes.

• Unplug the iron and take it to a sink. Holding it
horizontally over a sink, move and HOLD the variable
steam dial in the CLEAN position ( ). There may be
some hissing and spitting while self-cleaning. This is
normal.

• Stay clear of HOT steam and boiling water as it comes
out of the vents while lint, scale, and minerals flush
through! Continue to hold the variable steam dial in
the CLEAN position until all the water has emptied.
If necessary, rock the iron side to side and front to back
to empty it.

• When finished, release the variable steam dial, stand
the iron on its heel rest, and plug it in. Heat for about
2 minutes to dry out any remaining water then unplug.

How do i prevent my black and decker classic iron from spitting out how water after I have used it for a while?

Cheaper irons may steam better using distilled water. Minerals in water can cause this due to build up inside.
