For the Optiplex 320, a flashing amber light with no sound indication can mean 3 things.

1) Your power supply has failed

2) Your motherboard failed, most likely from a bad capacitor.

3) The front panel board (where the power button is located) is faulty or not connected properly.

I've worked with 10's of 1000's of Dell Optiplex's over the past 8 years and the flashing amber light is well known as a tell-tail sign of one of those three failure. Always start your trouble shoot with a PSU tester, then inspect the motherboard for domed or split/leaking capacitors...then on to the front panel which would require another panel and ribbon from the same model.

SOURCE: orange amber showing on the power button of dell

An amber led is indicative that your machine is stuck in either stand by or hibernation mode. If you're unable to boot up at all, the easiest way to clear it is to

  1. Unplug the machine
  2. open the machine, remove the CMOS battery for several minutes
  3. while unplugged and with CMOS battery out, press and hold the power button for 5 seconds
  4. re-insert the CMOS battery
  5. re-assemble the machine and plug in
  6. press power button and allow machine to run diagnostics
At this point it will try to run in SAFE mode. Once it boots up successfully, you should be good to go.
Best of luck!

Turn on only orange lihgt but won't boot up

A Blinking Amber or Yellow power button means that the power supply is receiving power from the source but is unable to properly distribute it to the components. This can be caused by a defective power supply or a defective motherboard. Just to make sure that nothing else is causing the problem, remove any PCI cards like modem, video card, sound card, etc... Remove the memory modules and disconnect cables to CD/DVD drives. Look at the USB ports to see if any are damaged.

IN dell optiplex sx280 model system we are using in this amber power led blinking continuly yellow color because of this not able to boot the system. kindly give the solution for the same

Hi there!

A blinking amber/orange light on the power button of your Dell Optiplex means a hardware failure. If you know how to strip down your computer to basic component, then I suggest you turn on with only the motherboard, processor, memory and PSU. If you are not familiar with this, I suggest you bring the computer to a qualified technician.

Hope this helps

I have a dell optiplex 755 there is a blinking orange or amber light when i press the power button can you help me please...

If you are getting a blinking amber light this is normally related to a power problem. So the first thing I would try resetting the flee power. You do this by unplugging the AC power and holding the power button in for 30 to 45 seconds. After you do this plug back in the AC power to see if the system will boot. If it will not the next thing I would look for is the diag lights to see if any are lite up. They are normally near the front USB unless you have a small form factor case then they are on the back. Then will point to a hard ware problem if any. If they are not lite up then most likely the problem is with the powersupply.

Note if you are still in warranty I would pass this info over to Dell and they should be able to get your system fixed.

Let me know if you have any more problems or questions.

My computer is blinking orange light

In addition to the power supply, motherboard issues can cause the blinking power light and no boot problems. The Optiplex 270, 520, 620, 745 and 755 units are all known to have issues with capacitors on the motherboard. Here is a link to an article about this issue and what to do about it:

I hope this helps, if sol please rate my solution.

DELL STARTUP

There was problem at one time with IOGear KVMs not working correctly with the USB chipset on the Dell motherboards. This problem was resolved by using a USB hub between the KVM cable and the computer. The user could take the USB portion of the KVM cable and plug it into a USB hub and then take the USB hub and plug it into the Dell computer. That should help with the problem.
