The camera keeps opening and closing halfway by itself! I cannot open it all the way and the screen remains black. The orange light comes on when I try to open it. How can I fix thi? Thanks, Katinka
Wow, Not even the manual knows this error. Must be serious. It can mean two things in my mind. The lens is obstructed some how. Inside or outside. Or the battery is not ok. If you can't see anything on the lens barrel outside, please try to charge the battery. The camera will shut down without warning, when the power is low. Be aware the camera won't work as you expect, when a USB cable is attached. Actually you are not allowed to connect the charger, when the camera is still switched on. Look how the charger reacts. See if the battery is charged as before, because if the signal battery full does not appear it could be you have to buy a new battery.
Success.
Testimonial: "Thanks a lot Harry, this morning I tried to turn it on again, which it did and it had even a picture again! But now it won't close so I can't connect it to the computer to charge! I am way away from a place to be able to buy a battery (in India not close to any major town)Any idea how I can close it now so that I could try charging it (It was still half full when I checked this morning). Any help greatly appreciated! Thanks a lot, Katinka"

I was having the same problem here. Error D: 5e02. I think I accidentally turned it on while it was in my pocket. However, I tried all the above solutions and it still would not work for me.
So, I decided "what the hell, it's out of warranty and will cost more than half it's price to get fixed... I'll open it up and see what's inside".
After I had the front cover off and got the two main halves of the camera apart, I turned it on and bingo! it fired up as normal - the lens opened up fully without any chattering and the blue error screen went away. It took pictures just fine. I reassembled the camera and it's still working as normal.
I suspect there is an alignment issue and partially disassembling the unit it gives the lenses enough room to re-align themselves.
Disassembly is easy even if you're remotely handy with tools. All you need is a set of jeweler's screwdrivers (less than $20.00 at any hardware store). However, do so at your own risk and only if your camera is out of warranty.
Here's how I did it:
1. Remove the 3 silver screws on the side and bottom of the camera.
2. Remove the 1 silver screw in the data port.
3. At the point of the bottom screw, pry the front cover up and work around to the thin side of the camera. Once you have this end pried up, you can pull the front cover off exposing the front half of the camera.
4. Remove the plastic chrome spacer ring that goes around the sides of the camera. Start where the bottom silver screw was and work it around and off. Careful, it's a bit flimsy.
5. Remove the 4 black crews at each corner of the camera.
6. Again, starting from the thin side of the camera, pry the front half of the camera (grey) away form the back half (silver). There's a bit of sticky stuff holding them together, but keep pulling gently but firmly until the two halves are seperated. NOTE: There is a flat "hook" on the bottom of the back half of the camera that is under the serial number sticker - you may need to gently lift up the sticker to get this hook to come free (I used a knife blade to pry up the sticker).
7. Once you have the two halves free, notice the copper colored ribbon cables between the front and back halves of the camera - BE SURE TO NOT SEPERATE THE HALVES TOO FAR OR YOU WILL DAMAGE THESE CABLES!
8. Now turn the camera on. My problem was solved that this point - lenses fully extended with no problems and LED screen acting normally.
9. Reassemble the camera in reverse order. The only tricky part is the "hook" on the bottom of the back half needs to go *under* the serial number sticker.
It worked for me when nothing else seemed to work. Your mileage may vary. Good Luck!

I found tilting my camer downwards towards the floor and removing the usb cover and then turning the camera on worked, I am unsure if its a faulty motor or slightly damaged lens but once it's retracted the camera works fine - this was a test I was able to repeatedly do.
Opening the camera did not display any visible faults although with the housing off it did operate better. this will unfortunatly remove some the cameras weather proofing in the way opening a splash resistant watch will mean it no longer can be used near to water, this is due to the fact these cameras are factory made, also you risk dust getting in.
I have picked up another Olympus with the same fault on eBay it would appear the 760 model also suffers from this same problem

When you turn the camera on, try it with the lens facing upwards and it should work, I had the same problem. Hope this helps :)

Turn on camera. Blurry pic. Wirly grinding noises. Blue screen.
Codes on blue screen:
5 f 0 8
5 e 0 2
5 f 0 8
5 e 0 2
Sometimes smacking the **** out of it fixes it. Today it doesn't seem to do the trick any more.
Suggestions?
