Apparently the camera thinks it has a usb wire connected to it. that is typically when these 2 options appear. Look carefully into the usb socket on the camera, and see that there is no debris in there. If so clean out with tip of a splintered tooth pick or similar non conductive item. It's possible the contacts in there are damaged.
What you can do is remove the SD card and plug it into a PC, copy all the pictures off it. You may need to use an SD card adapter thingy to plug it into a PC. (Commonly available) I would then format the SD card IN THE CAMERA, not in the pc. This may or may not help the problem. Otherwise you will need to send it in for repair, (warranty?) or live with it.

This is a malfunction of the camera. The same thing happened to mine. It gave me the option of power off or format card. I took my camera card to jewel osco and saved all my pictures onto a disc so i could format the card with out losing the pictures. I tried formatting the card and then the camera told me there was a card error. So I went out and paid $25 for a new olympus xd card, put it in the camera, pressed power and it said the same thing fo rthe brand new card that it had said for the card that actually had pictures on it. As far as I know there is no solution to this problem. You can still take pictures if you take your camera card out and use the internal memory. Olympus basically told me that I'd have to pay a **** load of money to have it fixed since the warranty is up.
