A cable modem & a router are two different things. You can pick up a "Cisco 'EtherFast' cable/DSL" (wired or wireless) router at Wal Mart for $35. But you need both a modem & router to get your PS3 up & running on the web. Once you get on, you'll need to set up a "PlayStation" account. Unlike the Xbox 360 Live network, PlayStation is free of charge. It's a very user-friendly interface, so you shouldn't have any problems there. Cisco will give you live customer service to walk you through hooking up your router. Please let me know you make out. If I can be of further assistance, please let me know. Good luck, bro.

PS3 (80GB) Obtain IP Address : Failed, Help?

Try swapping the ends of the ethernet cable between your PS3 and the router. Otherwise, try a different ethernet cable. Also check that there are lights on by your ethernet port on the PS3 and the router.

Ip address wont work on ps3 anymore

It is likely your internet connection is not working properly.

Unplug your modem, router, PC, and power down your PS3.

Plug in your Modem.
Wait for it to run it's full diagnostics.

Plug in your router and let it do the same.

Power on your computer and let it obtain an IP address.

Then re-try your PS3.

Cant establish wired connection

When you hooked up your connection to the PS3, did you reboot your modem and or router before doing so?

This will clear the memory of those two and allows the PS3 to gain its own IP and MAC address. Try this and see if it helps.
