Internet speed not as indicated by modem

Modem indicates that modem speed is 7mbps, but internet is actually running at slower than dial up. Started having this problem when ISP upgraded me from 3mbps to 7mbps, also now modem has to be reset several times to get internet light to come on. Same problem whether connected to ethernet or wirless, and have same problem regardless of which computer I connect. ISP says no problem whith their end and as I say above when connecting to check modem indicates it is getting the 7mbps from provider.

Problem occurs usually after upgrade of internet speed. contact your ISP again, ask them to check for latency or dropped packets within their network. they need to run a traceroute from their end and it would also be better if you can run a traceroute from your end. also run a speedtest through speedtest.net or speakeasy.net. There's also a possibility that the modem is becoming faulty. If your ISP provided you the modem it's still best to contact them for possible replacement.

Modem

Assuming that Windows has recognized the modem, and has loaded the correct device-drivers, Windows can use the modem.

You'll need to find an Internet Service Provider that provides "dial-up" service.

You'll need to have a land-line telephone (not a cell-phone) with your local telephone-company.

Connect a 4-wire cable (not an 8-wire Ethernet cable) from the "line" port on the modem to the telephone wall-jack.

Then, follow the instructions given you by your Internet Service Provider to configure your modem to connect to their dial-up server. Or, telphone them, and their Technical Support staff will guide you through the necessary configuration steps.

Slow Browsing

First of all, test what your actual speed is - for instance at http://www.4nettech.com/corp/internet-speed-test.html . If that shows that your Internet connection is fast, try cleaning up your browser, use Firefox instead of Internet Explorer, run a registry cleaner. Also temporarily turn off your antivirus program and visit one or two well-known safe sites (don't browse the Web in general without antivirus!) and see if the antivirus might be the culprit.

The modem is extremely slow-most downloads are far too slow

Dialup phone lines usually only transmit a minimum of 8 Baud. NetZero's high speed (5X) faster is done by caching pages you have already visited, not actially running internet but loading pages faster on your computer. Check your modem setting, 56k, 112K are normal speed setting to connect. Check your actual connection speed, 28.8 is probably all that you are getting on dialup.

About oruter

Actually a router will not improve your speed, unless you are upgrading from one speed to a faster speed. A router is a device that controls the 'traffic' on your network. In the simplest explanation it 'routes' the uploads/downloads/etc across your network. It also enables you to have multiple computers access the internet through the same internet access such as dial-up modem, cable modem, satellite, DSL, etc.

If you are running a 56K modem for your internet connection, the only thing you can really do to improve your connection speed is to obtain a software program that accelerates the download.

There are different types of 56K modems, and some do have faster overall speeds but the speed is not a huge change.

If I am misunderstanding your question, please provide more details and I will be happy to respond with further details.

Weak connection

HI,
As you have changed the router still the connection speed is slow, in this case it's better to contact your ISP get the line tested or a proper signal strength.
Also conduct a speedtest by going to the website internetfrog.com....indications are towards a line fault.

My webcam has all of the sudden started running slow on msn, it didn't before, so I don't understand why it is now, I've installed 3 different cams and it's doing the same with each one

If the image quality is poor while transmitting video over the Internet using video enabled programs such as MSN Messenger, Yahoo! or AOL Instant Messenger, your connection speed to the Internet directly affects the image quality of the transmitted video. Corporate LAN, DSL/cable modem connections will result in the best image quality experience, while dial-up connections may result in choppy and overall poor quality because of the slower connection speed. Even broadband connections such as DSL/cable modem may experience choppy video at times because of Internet traffic or slow upload speeds. If the image appears clearly in the camera software, most likely your Internet connection may be responsible for the poor image quality in your video program.
